Another one? Yup. I know painting is NOT my favorite thing to do, and it's really easy to pick up another kit and start rather than actually finish something, so I did. Anyway, I've always thought the Challenger looked like a hotrod, like a big T-72 except with a properly proportioned turret. I bought this kit last summer at the Austin AMPS show, ordered some Friuls and took off. So far I've only got a few hours in it (vintage Tamiya at it's best) and the hull is nearly done and Friuls on for fit. Something else going for me is that I have next to no reference material on this thing so I can actually build it without coming down with some kind of AMS. All I have is a few grainy pics in an old Concord book and a kit build, which is where I got clued in on reducing t he big steps on the outboard hull corners up front. I was thinking about all kinds of add-on stuff, but it's not to be apparently- even Sprue Bros is out of the Eduard PE for this kit, so onward. I'm gonna keep it simple, yes I am.

Okay, Slammer's done and in the case (looks good there) and I'm back to the Challenger for a while. I found and ordered two Photosniper books, Sprue Bros got the Eduard brass in and it's here but not the books, so I went ahead and used the mesh for the basket, all I wanted really. But. The Eduard set is two sheets of tiny bits alng with what I wanted, so I'm going to get back on the Magachs until the Challenger books get here. In the meantime: IMG_1979 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Typical mid-'80s Tamiya: some parts really well done, some not so well done, and lots of bigger than necessary location holes.
PS: I'm also debating whether or not to pull off some plastic bits and use the PE substitutes, but typical for Eduard, there's a lot of stuff in brass that's not as good as the plastic it's supposed to replace. Even too big three dimensional is better than two dimensional, in my not so humble opinion.

Still makes me think "hot rod". Long, low and with a long gun tube. I was surprised, it's noticeably longer than an M60, lower and wider too.

It's not dead! One of the too many kits I bought last week at the AMPS show was a Tamiya Chally, the later release with all the extra armor, and what I'd hoped was a correct turret stowage box. Nope, but I did get a bunch of the stuff I need to build this model as deployed, maybe Kosovo..... I dusted it off the other day, progress.

Good one. Look for some tan parts on this one soon, and I'm still looking for a good set of pics of the rear turret bin lid.
