So, after reading all the above and getting totally lost, exactly how is this to work?

Basically, you enter a model that you have a build thread for on OSM. The members vote for the model they like the best. The model that gets the most votes gets posted at the top of the forum for a month. We're still working on the nitty gritty details, and if you have any ideas, toss 'em on here!

I’m glad you guys decided to start this MOM. It certainly encourages people to build and share a little more. All for fun. Voting does get difficult when it’s more than on category but it looks like that’s been discussed already. I’m in!

I'd like to have some input on the state of the MOM. It started off with a bang....lots of entries...lots of votes. Lately, however, we seem to struggle getting enough entries to vote on, and then we have very few voters choosing the build they think should grace the top of the home page for a month. Is it the summer heat? Too many sessions out by the swimming pool? Watering the cattle? LOL I know summer can slow a forum down, that's why I send an email reminder when it's time to enter, and when it's time to vote.
There are quite a few members that check in almost on a daily basis, but a lot of them have not voted. There are about nine days left to vote on October's MOM, and there are some fantastic builds entered that deserve more recognition than they've received thus far.
If you have any ideas that might help the MOM, then post them here.
Thanks, BUCKY(admin)

MOM might be happy if we take out the trash more often without being told... oh wait you mean Model Of the Month MOM!!! My bad!!! Seriously though I am thinking each month it has only been a handful of us voting and entering has been for the most part the same builders from the very start... the quality of the builds here on OSM scare some people from even trying as they feel their work isn't up to the same standards... not sure what to do about that...

If you look at the vote of this thread you will see only 14 voted to begin with...

I'm thinking the quality of builds hereabout is very close from one member to the next. I see no need to be skeered! HAHAHA
Another forum I know of splits their MODEL OF THE MONTH (Joe)(tee hee) into three categories. There are three winners each month, with three different type builds. If that would benefit here, I would consider it. not sure we have enough members for that, however. The forum I'm thinking of has nearly 1400 members!! LOL

Not sure how you can make poeople vote, the entries are always good but never intimating as we all get along. Maybe one vote per person? That way you haven’t got to think too hard

I don't know how to get more ppl to vote. I myself see a few ppl who check in all the time and never contribute yet on other forums they don't know how to shut up. I notice things like that. But Im the kind of guy that prefers quality over quantity. So im just fine with the 15-20 active members we have here, that post and stuff. In my eyes Id rather have the 15-20 or so active members vote on it, than have someone who doesn't post at all pop on and vote. Cause to me their vote doesn't matter. If you cant be bothered to be active don't vote I say. heck I even entered my yellow Volvo and ended up dead last. I think i got 4 votes. I didn't care because it was voted on my members who followed my build cause their active. It would have ticked me off if i got a ton of votes from ppl who are never around at all ever and won. I wouldn't have accepted it, That would not be right.
Maybe im a lil conceited like that. But I have always been blunt and I don't sugar coat anything

Great comment, Ben! That line of thought is certainly a good one! I see the other sites have a bunch of votes from members that don't even post comments.

My feeling is this lack of votes and entries is a symptom of our current state in the Forums. I think if we want more votes, and participants, we need to increase membership. Lately, it seems to me only about six or seven people post here and reply often to others. Not only that, but I constantly see "Happy Birthday" posts for members who I have never seen post here and I always wonder, 'who is that and why are they getting birthday wishes they most likely won't ever see since they don't visit here?' Back when I first started, I'd get three pages of notifications in my E-mail box of replies to posts I was following and it was nearly impassible to keep up with new posts since they came so fast and furious. Nowadays, I get a page of notifications in my E-mail box, but it's for only four or five Threads and the same four to six people replying. many times the number of replies are only the same two people going back and forth on something. Heck, whenever I post any updates in my Manufacturing Thread, I'll get two to four replies now where I used to get seven to ten. I know things happen, and people lose the drive for this hobby sometimes, but what are we doing to make these boards more welcome to others and to encourage more posting overall? I for one have noticed an explosion of car-related posts and Threads. This is not a bad thing; I love looking at a well made and painted car model and envy those who can do them well. Still, this might make many potential members think this is an all-car Forums and they might not be willing or encouraged to post any other military type models because they feel they would not be welcomed here. I'm just pointing out a possible perception here; again, I like looking at magnificent car models and have even tried a few myself.
Finally, it almost seems to me this place has lost a little of it's "family"-type feel; like we had on the old LEM, for those former LEMurs who came here and remember it. I don't know why or how it came to be but I feel it has happened. Maybe I'm wrong and it is only my perception, but I had to bring up that possibility.
What are we doing to bring in new blood? Are we relying on Facebook to bring people here? I find that does NOT work at all; people would rather post on those pages there where everything falls away and disappears before anyone as any real chance of seeing it instead of posting in a Forums like these where it can be viewed over and over to one's heart's content. In fact, in my experience I think that Facebook kills Forums like these. It happened with the LEM, despite my best efforts to stop it from happening.
Perhaps my wild speculations here are for naught. Perhaps once Fall and Winter set in, we'll be back up to our usual rowdy Forums with loads of returnees who are done with summer activities and gleefully return to the fold here. One can only hope. What ever the case; if you bring in more new blood and returnees, you'll get more participation in the Model of the Month.

Some valid points... summer does take a toll on building and posting... many have been in slumps and quite a few have been dealing with big health issues like you Mark. Many are dealing with financial issues or lack of work that eats into their mojo or even to the point of not being able to buy what they need. I think we need to all be promoting the hobby every chance we get, it's not just the leaderships job. Our local club has dwindled down in members as well, it's not just a forum thing. As to comparing one forum to another that isn't fair... different people, different times, we can't go back we can only go forward. Many things contribute to a forum going down as we have all experienced in the past. Personalities, illness of the leader, lost interest in the hobby as was the case of Robert on the LEM, and Paul and Dicky on The Worx. We have certainly got lots of car builds going on right now, me included... but we also have planes, armor and figures too... sci-fi kits have recently been built as well. We are alive and well as long as at least two people keep active... we have more like 20... So don't be discouraged or upset by slowness, we are moving forward... We are OSM and we are moving forward not backwards... invite your friends in, stay active and most of all have fun!!! This message is brought to you by Jcon and I approve this message!!! Lol!!!

Well said, Joe! This is an all-inclusive forum. Some may not like that, but here we have something for everybody.
My main question was how to invigorate the Model Of the Month. The summer slow down seems to be one reason for the lack of MOM activity, but there have been some wonderful models finished this summer here that haven't been entered in the MOM. It certainly is not a requirement to enter, but I am curious because they would certainly get the votes!
Recruit, recruit, recruit. That's one way to build up the membership. If you know of members from past forums that are not here, give them a shout. Invite them to give us a look. I know some have been here and didn't like what we have. That's okay. I've visited other forums and didn't like them! LOL

If I can remember when the vote comes out I would vote more often, doeeeeee..........! I know, sad excuse, but it's all I got. No worries Gents, summer is over and when the snow flies, so does the paint and sprues!
