Howdy, folks!
The title of this thread says it all. I started OSM on the date stated in the title. It came about as a result of another forum shutting down. When I began this forum, a fair number of the members from the old one joined in. Back in those days, it was primarily an automotive themed forum, mostly civilian models. As you are aware, now, this place has a great sampling of just about anything that can be glued, screwed, snapped, or even taped together, with all sorts of paints and pigments and even real dirt tossed on for good measure. The added categories came about due to the fact that ANOTHER forum shut down! It was primarily a military forum. I invited members from that forum to check out OSM, and I enlisted the help our resident GURU, JCON to help revamp this little corner of the world wide web to try to accommodate all different types and styles of scale models. Currently, we stand at 165 members. Some are great contributors, some stop by, occasionally, some quietly check in to see what's going on, and some are long-time members who may have forgotten their login credentials! Hopefully, they'll figure it out and pay us a visit. LOL
I thought maybe it might be a fun little bit of trivia to have yuze gize post up what you were up to way back in July, 2011. I keep hoping that I'll remember something that I can post up! HAHA (I mean other than building a forum!)
I know I was building car and truck models in my spare time when I wasn't playing the part of a pipefitter on the construction jobs that paid me money so I could buy stuff for my favorite hobby! I also visited several forums, such as Scale Auto, Memory Lane, Model Car Magazine, and many others.
So....tell us what was going on in your world around July, 2011!

Yessir. On the 31st day of July, 2021, this site will celebrate its tenth anniversary. I thought it would be kinda neat to hear what was going on with the members ten years ago.

Wow, I will try to remember that far back. I wish I still had access to the old LEM to see how many models I finished that year. I do remember that I had come back from the Phoenix Nationals the previous August with an unexpected Second Place for my HEMMTT cargo truck. Checking on the old St. Crispin's Irregulars site, I went back to see all the models I had posted there. According to that old Forums, I had completed about 35 models that year of 2011, but I believe there were more that didn't make it into those boards. One of them was my 6.5-foot-long Panzerzug BP-44 Armored Train after a year and a half of working on it. That was my Magnum Opus at that time; later superseded by Dora two years down the road.

Back then I hadn't picked up a kit of any kind since at least the mid 90's starting again around 2017 I think which was due to an illness, boy was the quality of the new stuff and prices a shock when I re-started!!

Wow, July 2011.
Let's see...I was 49 and still a smoker, probably 2.5 packs of Salem Lights per day. My budget files don't go back that far, but the July 2012 spreadsheet shows a $200 purchase of cigarettes from the NEX here in Pensacola!!! How stupid was that! (I quit for good in September 2012)
I was still working as a GS9 Technical Training Instructor for the USAF here here at the Navy base, teaching brand new basic trainees, foreign nationals, and Air National Guard troops the marvels of Nondestructive Inspection as a career. It was a pretty good job, but I quit and retired for good about 14 months later.
I was not building very many models at that time. As others have mentioned, I was a member of the LEM website, but during the 4 years I worked in civil service, my model building dropped dramatically...maybe one or two per year at the most. I was golfing avidly and had a regular Sunday morning meet-up with about 15 other guys. We'd play (and bet) 18 holes every week and had a great time. I also think it was around this time that my Mother was looking to move down to Pensacola permanently from Michigan (oh, joy). I love her greatly, but how does the old quote go, "Distance makes the heart grow fonder."? (Hey, Joe! What's the real estate market look like up your way?) LOL!
There's no computer or social media records from back then, so it's hard to pin-point anything else specific. I do know that physically, I felt a WHOLE lot better back then than I do now!!!

A yes, the LEM! I still miss that place. I wish I could go back and see what I'd done on that site; it surely must be more accurate than the Meetup site for St. Crispin's I went to to find out what I'd done back then.

Flash Back, woof! I was "sniffin paint and gluin my fingers together" back then. I think I was working on the Afghan dio, "Knock and Talk", if my memory serves me correctly. I'm a slow painter, so it's not too difficult to remember those kinda thangs, lol.
I was still a Professional Rugby player at the time, so times were good. They run, we Ruck Over Bby! Lots of construction on the house back then too, a lot. The grass in the yard was green back then too, not so many fires either, lol.
Either way, the bunker was in full swing at snow fly, just like nowadays. So, we're good!

dogfish7, (OZ) has been here at OSM since the beginning. I've seen some great projects fly off his workbench. And the watercolor paintings are an added attraction that brings light to the fact that model builders have other interests, too! Thanks for hanging in here, Bruce, and keep up the great work!

Congratulations OSM for 10years. I want to tell all of you how honored and humbled I am to be part of this special community of model makers. I can tell you I have joined and left many and none compare to OSM. I felt welcome the moment I registered to be a member. Top that off with some of the if not most talented modelers on the planet this is the only place for me. Thank you for having me and being such cool guys.

I am a relatively new member to this forum (I think maybe about two years or so). I was a member of a couple of Yahoo forums in 2011, and I can say this one has the broadest offering of topics and there is little of the "cars" versus "military" division that I have encountered elsewhere. Back in 2011 I was not active in model making, although I had about 8 I planned on doing. That number of kits has now grown tenfold, and I started building again in 2015. What I did do in 2011 was swap vehicles. I like classic cars and at the time owned an Austin Healey. However, with a wife and two daughters it made it hard to carry then all on a road trip for ice cream. So I swapped the Healey for a Mustang. This is the one weekend I felt like a true car collector.

Beautiful 10th birthday, God, how fast these years passed! I was glad to be received, I had been a member on the old one too, I found old friends, I made new ones. Each time surprised by the warmth of your heart, by the appreciation, joy and confidence shown. Together, on the same path, side by side, learning to enjoy what we do and to learn permanently! Honoured to be with you, so sorry to post rarely! Nicolae

Very happy to have you on board, guys! It seems like each member has a little something different going on regarding the scale model hobby. Real life stuff, too!
