I'd like to start this Name That Tune thread. I'm not sure where it should go on the forum or if it should be here at all . I belong to another model forum and this is a topic posted there. I like the idea. If it goes nowhere that's Ok. You post a line from a song then see who is the first to answer correctly, song title and band. They don't necessarily have to post a line from a different song but it would help to keep it going. Seems a lot of my favorite songs have some strange lyrics. I'll start with this line: And I've seen pigs all sitting watching picture slides

A pretty cool thread, Jim. This is the right category for it. Of course, I'm not familiar with this particular line, so I'll leave it to someone else to come up with the answer. How about it, folks?

We'll see if it goes anywhere. I'd hazard a guess you've heard the song. You just haven't caught this line in it Bucky.
I was also hoping to spark some interest from members who may not post often. It could be a good thread to get involved in.
If someone else wants to post a different line without guessing mine I'm good with that.

It is Do Ya by ELO. One of my faves. Good job Joe.
I'm not familiar with your choice.

Hint, country music...

Country Rock actually... Think its Alabama - "The closer you get"
Try "She flew the Stars and Stripes of the land of the Free"As the next lyric - two possible answers, the original artist and the one recorded cover version - Same hint as Joe's (above)

Reuben James - Woody Guthrie
Or the Kingston Trio
I think Kenny Rogers did a version as well.
Try this one next. Not country!
You’re really a good laugh, almost a joker

This is close to Pink Floyd's Pigs (Three different ones) from Animals which goes "You're nearly a good laugh, Almost a Joker".
If yours is Floyd it's cool. If it's not, I'm stumped.

Technically it was "The sinking of the Reuben James" and it was Woody Guthrie, the only cover permitted by Guthrie (the others who covered it were taken to court for recording it without seeking Guthrie's permission first), reason for court action was he'd set it to an even older tune "Wildwood Flower", for which he'd obtained permission from the estate of the tune's writer, others who recorded/covered the Guthrie song were liable for recording it without his permission and using "Wildwood Flower" without the writer's estate permission. The only legit cover was by the Weavers, who had obtained permission to record it from both sources. Kenny Rogers did a song called "Reuben James", which had nothing to do with the Guthrie song, instead being about "a no-account, share cropping coloured man, who would steal anything he can, and everybody laid the blame on Reuben James"
Yours should be from"Pigs - Three Different Ones" by Pink Floyd off "Animals", but the quote is wrong as outlined by DNPM "You're nearly a good laugh, almost a joker, with your head down in the pig mines, just keep on digging, you're nearly a laugh, almost worth a quick grin, you're nearly a laugh, but you're really a cry"

Yes that’s what it is. I couldn’t remember the exact words. Knew I was close. No harm, no foul. Please keep playing. This thread started in the Shout Box with a Pink Floyd line from the Wall answered by Obscurity. Floyd is my number one band so I knew this one right away. This confirmed: Floyd has a lot of songs with memorable lyrics. The first song line I recall being stuck in my head was "The paper holds their folded faces to the floor and everyday the paperboy brings more". Brain Damage/Dark Side of the Moon. Once I got the concept of what it meant (at least to me) I couldn't let it go. That's when I really started to listen to the words in songs. I'm old too. I'll post this one: The hum of conversation will dissolve you into me

One step closer - Asia
Pink Floyd is one of my absolute favorites as well, along with this band:
“I tell you to enjoy life, I wish I could but it's too late”
This song is the song that made me really start paying attention to lurics as a young teen, way back in the day!

Trust me, I’m not good enough at knowing lyrics to have just known that Asia song. Normally I would not have, but I just heard it a little bit ago on my Pandora while mowing. I had heard it, but didn’t know it well. I stopped the mower and pulled up the lyrics as it finished playing. Otherwise I wouldn’t have had a clue.

I tell you to enjoy life, I wish I could but it's too late I know this one but I will leave it for someone else for a while. We musta grown up around the same time, listening to the same music. The Asia song is correct. Another one of my favorites. I have my own interpretation, never having read the concept behind the song, but the story being sung is just too cool. When you post a song make it stand out please. Make it bold, put in italics, underline, change color or font.

I’ll put it in quotations from here on out. That’s the best I can do.
