Is a hurricane bracket to allow for flex?

Yes, it is designed to hold everything together in high hurricane winds, while giving enough flex to weather the high winds.

I use hurricane brackets for the snow load, no hurricanes round cheer, lol. I use these brackets for the exact opposite reason, to avoid flex, but retain rigidity and beef up the structural load allowable. Every build in our area needs to comply with building codes allowing for a 4' snow load. Nothing worse than having to shovel snow off your roof, done it before. The last time was two yrs ago, what a hoot.

Yeah not fun to shovel off your roof... I bought a snow rake for the shop roof...

That is very understandable. Hurricane tries provide a great rigidity and sturdiness to any structure. I've used them on some patio covers out here to help withstand the Santa Ana winds that sometimes blow hard enough to reach hurricane strength.

This won't get any easier or much funnerererer the younger I get. Rakes work great if you can reach far enough. All my deck additions have been over kill so I don't have to do this. I still feel better removing it from time to time.

Barn is finally done, pergola up to bat. Got all the materials, just need cedar sticks for the fencing. Prints are done, so I'll be working the pergola this weekend.
Cheers, Ski.

Yeah, it always does when you are building it. Especially when stuff goes wrong, weather delays you or you forget to do something before something else. I'm right there with you.

Yeah, it always does when you are building it. Especially when stuff goes wrong, weather delays you or you forget to do something before something else. I'm right there with you. You nailed it Duke, never fails. I recon the most disappointing aspect of this build was not the labor intensive part, but the drastic rise in material costs. Up 60% from 2016, and that bites!

Pergola update;
Just a few more pieces to cut, shape and then dig some holes. You may be wondering why use pressure treated lumber instead of cedar. Two reasons, cost and longevity. I couldn't justify the expense of cedar or good old pine. It's a dang garden pergola, not as pianey, HA! Moma don't mind no how any hoot.
Planing out that arched beam was a real hoot, especially when my sander went belly up. Ah, that's why they made sanding blocks, right?
Once this is done it'll be firewood and call it good, bunker time Bby!
Cheers, Ski.
