My "Grail" list is topped not by one, but by 7 kits: the Revival series by Renwal. These were designed by Virgil Exner (my favorite designer) in the early 60's as (then) modern interpretations of various classic cars from the 30's. My favorite, and the one I tried most often to get, is the Duesenberg. I've been trying to get these kits since the 70's, and always seem to be a day late or dollars short! Finally, yesterday, I managed to get 2 of them. Oddly, the Duesenberg, which usually brings the highest prices, had no other bidders. These are the 2 I got: 2 Down, 5 to go! Tom

You hit upon the reason it's taking me so long to get these kits (and others): having to pay collector's prices for kits I intend to build- I don't buy anything that I won't build. I figured I may as well just bite the bullet- they're not going to get any cheaper!

Just thought I'd mention this: When I bid on the Duesenberg (on Ebay), the pictures showed a complete, unpainted kit with the engine assembled. What I received was a factory sealed kit! That's the second time I've gotten better than I bargained for (out of 1000+ transactions)! Never got burned, either!

Great grabs, Tom!! I have always had an interest in the Renwal car kits. I have the Packard, Duesenberg, Stutz, Bugatti, and two Mercers....one of them molded in white with red interior parts, and the other molded in red with white interior parts! I got it off ebay, and it came to me from Poland!!!! The two I see less frequently are the Jordan Playboy and the Pierce Arrow. I keep a constant watch for those two kits.

I've never seen the Jordon, but a Pierce Arrow (sealed)sold recently for something like $175- a bit out of my price range!

The Renwal kits from 1966 were a styling exercise to represent what the cars from the early years might look like, if they were still being built. In the upper left corner of each kit box top, you can see a black and white of the original car from the early years. These kits really bring premium prices these days, but I remember when they were no more than two dollars a kit!!!

Here is the Duesenberg: Here is the Stutz: And here is the Bugatti: Rare kits these days. I bought these to build, but they are actually more valuable unbuilt! Not near as much fun, tho!
