This one is done for now... I didn't do a build thread because there's not much to this. It's a Bachmann ready-to-roll car which comes molded in black with a tan deck in the unlettered form that I purchased. It's also available in other colors for specific railroads. I pried it apart for painting and added knuckle couplers. I also thought the brake wheel shaft was overly chunky (about 3" diameter in scale!) so I chopped it off, filled the mounting hole with plastic rod, and drilled the rod and wheel for a .020" brass shaft. I painted this with Humbrol and Model Master enamels, finishing with a gray-blue thick wash of artist's oils to give it a chalky, faded appearance. The idea is that this was once a Great Northern car in their 1960s sky-blue color. The deck was repainted with several shades of greyish tan, masking off small groups of boards to represent wood planks of various ages with newer replacements being lighter & brighter. I used an overall enamel wash to unify the tones and highlight the seams. The car has been sprayed with Dullcote overall. It's done for now. It still needs to be patched, which is railroad parlance for adding new reporting marks for a new owner. This is often done by painting patches of the railroad's color with new lettering and serial number. I don't have decal sheets for appropriate lettering and numbers yet, nor have I decided on a railroad name or color scheme. When I do, I will paint & gloss the patches and decal as appropriate.

Thank you, Joe! This one will be one of the longer cars on the layout since I'll be rather limited in the radius of my turns (between 18 and 22 inches). It will get paired with an as yet unpurchased short flat car, so that the boom of a yarder on the 62' car has some swing room going around curves. This car is probably overkill, since it's got about a hundred tons of capacity and the yarder is 42. But the issue to be dealt with is height, and a yarder will add fifteen scale feet (almost 2.1 inches) to the height of the combination. And that, plus the height of roadbed & rail governs the minimum height that I have to work with when a higher level track crosses a lower level one. So very much to think about when planning out the whole thing.

I enjoy watching what you do with these rail cars Greg. I also learn alot about 'em in reading your text.
