This was a fun little build I did a while back, Red Iron Scale Models 1/24 scale Sputnik 1, the world's first artificial satellite. This was the first injection molded kit from Red Iron, due to existing sanctions against Russia the kit is not easily obtained these days. I got this pre sanctions from Mega Hobby who were importing the kit, and using my Mega Rewards, it was almost free!
The kit comes all on one sprue and also includes a fret of rather thick photoetch and brass tubes for the antennas.
Assembly was obviously quite quick, the most difficult thing being bending the thick etch antenna mounts.
The model was primed and given a couple coats of metallizer paint, I honestly don't remember which flavor, I used a bottle I had already opened for some other project.
I gave the panel outlines a wash of black and painted the insulator detail on the antenna mounts a dark brown color. The base was painted a dark bronze color using Rustoleum hammer tone finish paint and hand brushed the lettering with red. I also added a red decal stripe around the edge of the base as an added accent.
This was a fun little build. While researching photos of Sputnik I found some images of contemporary propaganda posters that had a very industrial look that I tried to impart onto the model with the black wash and not quite polished mirror finish. Anyway, I am satisfied with how it turned out.
