This kit, kind of something different, although I do have a Magach 6 working too... after coming back from the IPMS Nats, I needed something different, and this kit has been in the stash since last winter. IMG_4001 by Russel Baer, on Flickr As it sits today, less the turret which is getting some un-needed blobs removed and textured... IMG_4012 by Russel Baer, on Flickr With the kit wheels lacking the reinforcing ribs on the inner surfaces of the road wheel rims, I pirated a set of wheels from a Takom Chieftain "Marksman", almost a direct fit. I tried cutting the ribs into one of the AH wheels but had a brain storm and pulled the Takom kit down and bingo, wheels. I bought the Marksman kit for the turret anyway.... Tracks are San Xin, very nice with ready-to-use brass pins, each run of 102 links taking about 30 minutes to assemble. Kit wheel below: IMG_4003 by Russel Baer, on Flickr The difference between a modified kit wheel and the Takom wheels: IMG_4005 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Fuzzy pic of the kit wheel, but you can see the distinct ribs in the Takom wheels.

Well. Bunch done since last post: lots of straight-up assembly and some changes, mostly all the molded-on tie downs are scraped and replaced, along with a couple of things I thought were soft, replaced with plastic strip. The DEF mantlet cover, intended for the AFV Club kit, fit okay, lots of fiddly bits on the glacis, and texturing on the turret, necessary for two reasons: one, the upper portion didn't fit well, leaving a step which I may have been able to minimize if I'd changed the assembly order and two: the kit texture looked like a hunk of termite infested wood that had been sectioned. Other than vague parts locations in the instructions, no problems to report. Thanks y'all. Ready for paint, with a couple of items removed since they were not on YKW-period tanks: turret crew personal weapons and the 30 cal ammo can rack. In living color: IMG_4036 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I almost had a problem: I wanted a light tan and had one can, nearly full, of old ModelMaster Us desert tan, so out it came. The problem was most of the propellant had gone away and it wasn't a good spray, more of a splattering. I hung in, laid it on thicker than I should have and it leveled okay but I was not stuck with partial coverage. Hmmm.... I let it cure for 24 hours, then used Tamiya TS-46, light tan, on the lower surfaces and Vallejo "bone white", a fantasy color, on the upper surfaces. I think it worked, and after some light dusting and scratches, should come out okay. Lesson learned: no more using old spray cans. But while the paint was drying, I needed something to do, so out came this: IMG_4040 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I figured something easy, almost OOB and smallish would be a good space-filler. After a couple of hours I'm this far: IMG_4038 by Russel Baer, on Flickr It's got great fit and it's just cute as heck. It'll be IDF of course, and I figured why not, it's been in the stash for over a year (a relative newcomer to my still growing inventory) and It will be a great contrast to a Merkava or Magach. Heck, the Sho't makes it look like a toy.

I have not paid close attention to releases over the past few years, didn't even know Tamiya had an AMX-13, not something I'm likely to build or anything, but its awesome to see these types of releases. A lot of the releases are subjects long neglected by model manufacturers and now we get 2 or 3 manufacturers releasing them within a few years of each other.

Sho't is in color and washed, pin wash(es) nearly done. I'm doing some minor chipping this time, nothing major but the pics I have show some around the tool and storage boxes. I'm using a needle in a pin vise to actually scratch the paint down to primer. I still have to lighten the mantlet cover quite a bit but I started dark to help highlight the folds and wrinkles in the material. IMG_4058 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I have the Legends stowage set but a lot of the items are for later Sho'ts, so I'll have to sort through the lot to decide which ones to use. And while I'm waiting for paint to dry, I've been piddling along with the AMX: I built the turret riser the IDF made and installed, something about the turret interfering with the driver's hatch as it rotated, and the gun tube having to raise in certain turret positions... IMG_4048 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I found drawings and pics on another site and made the plate from .040" card and rectangular stock. I also cut out the center of the turret ring and raised it so the turret still locks on using the kit tabs. IMG_4045 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I'll be putting the rest of the AMX progress on a separate thread. But whil I was digging aroung for pics, I found this: IMG_4055 by Russel Baer, on Flickr These guys were hanging around at the base of the Masada area, must have been December of '96, and I made sure to ask before I took the pic. I'm seriously thinking I need to build this.
