Decided to start this so I have more than one project to fiddle with I know the box sez AMT but the sprue flags say Ertl These mine trucks had many different engine options. Ertl gives you a Detroit 16/71 two stroke in the kit, and it really does not need alot of extra work as these engines were not loaded down with a bunch of street legal and smog garbage. This is the same engine I had on my old Salmon tender in AK. Assembling and cleaning up stuff with a seam This much left to go I'll do the rest of the sub assemblies, detail out the engine, assemble the frame, then it'll be hose time. These things had miles of hoses in them that, of course, the kit does not provide. They don't provide a schematic for them either but I did find some pretty good pictures in several places.

Welcome blokes Got much of it assembled Fit so far is not as good as I'd hoped but not as bad as I'd feared. For a vintage kit, however, it's exceptional. The dump body looks like it'll need a fair amount of putty work, and the framework for it is taking quite a bit longer than I thought it would as the body itself is a bit wavy. This means flattening out the floor with the braces, and than translates to glue and hold tight for awhile 'till the glue takes a set and you can let go of it. Good thing I discovered Tammy quick grab glue sometime back Regards, Mark

Wow, don't show this to the grandkids, you'll never get it back. Everyone remembers their Tonka Trucks, I sure do. That is one big kit. Bookmarked!

Thanks gents Not to worry, the grandbrats are old enough to know what'll happen to them should they get their hands on the bench Engine started and mostly complete Since everyone else seems to paint their engines yellow like the rest of the model, I decided to be obtuse and paint mine that oddball Detroit grey green that all the old 71 series two strokes came in. I only detailed out the side pictured since the other will be invisible at the end, and as most of you know I don't like to waste my effort. Air and hydraulics next

Thanks gents
Good to see ya Joe It's too bad what happened to MSC but the nature of the stuff that was beginning to appear there made me decide to disappear, don't want to be anywhere close to those sorts of things. Inevitable, I guess, when those who start websites loose interest but hey it had a good run for quite some time.
There'll be a temporary halt on this for a few days, turkey season is here and I have to change out the injectors in the old Ford, when it's close to or below freezing out it starts to flood itself out above 1200 RPM and my short term fuel trims go to +42.2 on both banks. I'll be back with more of my nonsense soon enough

Fine idea JC I'd take you up on it except the great state of Washington would probably not think too highly of this May as well include the interrupting project here It's been said that Ford likes to make things hard. Believe it The injectors themselves for those who don't know what they look like, smart people probably know better than to tangle with stuff like this #1 cylinder injector. How did it run at all I do have some culpability here, should have swapped out injectors as a matter of course before I installed this engine. Ha next time

Is that a 4.2 litre? Dude you aint kiddin' about Ford making things hard. I work in a plant that's got a frickin' FLEET of Ford trucks. Just be glad you're not doing spark plugs in a 5.4 liter V-8. Somebody needs to have their kicked for that one.

No this is the 4.0 SOHC in a 2000 Exploder. The only reason I have this is that someone gave it to me

Ah don't be, could be worse, could be the 5L Don't have the turkey yet but did get the Exploder back running. I had a bad moment when I started it up and it was shuddering and surging but another look showed I'd forgotten a rather large vaccum hose on the upper intake manifold. After sticking it on it ran, and now runs fine...better than before but we'll see when it gets cold again. This means I've been able to fool with the model again. Here I've dry assembled some of it to get an idea of the final product This, for all of AMT's bragging about it, is really not a very good kit by today's standards as fit's fairly rough and there is quite a bit of missing detail. I used Mission Model paint on the frame which required three coats to get good coverage, probably more a problem with the color than the paint as yellow is pretty hard to work with. This project's beginning to get onerous, I may need to set it aside for awhile and get another shelf scraping done so I don't go haywire and toss it. I'll see what it looks like in the morning Regards, Mark

Hang in there with it Mark. I dunno what it is about AMT and their big rigs but they seem to have a multitude of problems. I have got the Freightliner COE that I really want to build and I built an entire mock up of the kit to see what problems I would have with it and MAN.......talk about a windy road. Probably the biggest hang up I've got with it is that the headlights are too high and require repositioning. Why AMT hasn't corrected this or that anyone hasn't already casted a complete resin cab to fix this issue.....I just simply do not know.
