More using up parts to do weird or not-so-weird vehicles that I've always wanted to do, this time an m60 slick with a 'dozer. This is completely inspired by a pic in David Doyle's "M60 in Action" book, pg 34 for anyone who has the book. It's perfectly typical of the US in Germany in the '60s, a tank in town, broken and waiting for a retriever. The blase is up, suspension squatted in front and the crew looks ready to relax in pleasant weather. So I had a hull started, one of those things I find myself doing, using Tamiya and Academy parts and even doing a "corrected" upper glacis. I'm also trying to use up bits in the parts stash. I have both Takom and AFV Club kits and parts, but I just can't find it in myself to toss perfectly buildable kits, along with all the AM stuff I've accumulated for them. They bring next to nothing on consignment, so I'm just enjoying the whackin' and a hackin'. I found a Commanders Models "slick" turret at the last show I went to, and that was the last piece I needed. I had the Takom M60A1 and 'dozer in the stash (two, actually) so after I got tired od sticking little bitty parts on the AMX hull, I got into this. The big question was would the Takom 'dozer kit work on the Tamiya hull. Answer is, yes. It only took a little fiddling until I was here: IMG_2691 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_2690 by Russel Baer, on Flickr That was the "hard" part. I did my usual enhancements to the Academy suspension, added some newly tooled road wheels from the Academy M60A2 kit and some approximations of hull details too. The rest of the 'dozer stuff was easy enough, really nicely done be Takom. IMG_2694 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Then a few more hull bits and I'm here: IMG_2695 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_2696 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I keep building these things using old kits even though I have newer, better kits right here, just can't help it. I have started an AFV Club hull though, thinking of doing a Magach 6B Gal to use up an old Legends conversion.

T'anks y'all! Glacis stuff done now, the Takom headlights, extensions and guards were like ten or eleven pieces for each side. I finished the front fender stiffeners and added some Legends(?) mud flaps after some thinning, and the driver's lock thingie. I was kind of happy with the ease of getting the headlights mounted and symmetrical cuz I had to make the bosses on the glacis too. Anyway, every single piece on the two 'dozer sprues is used up. The blade is together but I think I'll leave it off until I paint. IMG_2726 by Russel Baer, on Flickr

That looks like a beefy system. Now, I know this has got some kit bashing, excellent BTW, but were that hydraulic lines considered sound and did they survive the field. Always wondered about plumbing on the underside of the tank, but how else would it happen, lol.

Good questions, which the Israelis addressed by running all the hydraulic lines inside the hull. Here's a pic of my IDF version, 'dozer reservoir on the left rear fender, pump in an armored box and the lines entering the engine bay. That's the Verlinden kit btw, of the IDF-specific version. IMG_1290 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Notice no external lines. The only drawback was that this installation of the 'dozer kit was permanent. From what I've gleaned from former tankers who had direct experience with the M9 kit on the M60 series, the external lines were remarkably trouble free, given some awareness on the driver's part when in particular situations.

Goofy stuff here: glacis bits done, gun travel lock w/scratched mount, infantry phone on w/ mounts added. The hull is about done too, bottom access ports finished. I'm getting low on .025" and .040" hex rod..... IMG_2728 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_2727 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_2729 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Time to get along with the turret. I did mount a gun tube last night, an old Verlinden item I think since the Commanders part had a slight warp to it. Who knows how long it's been in a bag somewhere. I may try and straighten it later, use it on something else.

T'anks y'all! I had a little time to play with the turret tonight, so I added a few bits, then decided to go ahead and get into the bustle rack, not something I was looking forward to. To my surprise, the jig in the kit (plug for the old "Chesapeake Model Designs" kit here) made it easy, and in about 30 minutes I had the basics assembled. I was anticipating having a wrestling match with it, but not today. I'm gonna hang onto the jig, it should work with any M60A-nothing turret. IMG_2731 by Russel Baer, on Flickr

Okay, back home but with a catch: I kind of massed up my back (again) and sitting is a non-event right now. I did get some work (it's not "work", it's fun) done right before I went out of town though, completing the turret except for any stowage I might add and the radio antennae. I wanted to use an AFV Club spotlight but the CMD mantlet brackets were designed for the really old Tamiya spots, so I kind of adapted and scratched the mount up and used a cobbled-together Taliya part for the lamp body. Unless I do a direct comparison with the AFC Club butt'y, it looks the part. IMG_2845 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_2844 by Russel Baer, on Flickr
