This is all true of my first job just thought it would be good to share.
In the early 80's I was a kid of 16 my first job was working for a local crop spraying and fencing company.
We did a lot of work weed killing around a lot of RAF bases. These included RAF Scampton, Whittering, Cranwell etc.
At RAF Whittering I was lucky enough to get to go in the control tower to see Harriers taking off, one did a vertical takeoff turned and bowed to the control tower and flew off.
At RAF Cranwell there wasn't a lot of flying to see but I was working near the dog kennels one day and saw a small bonfire. So me being me had a look to see what they were burning and it was a stack of dress caps. They were too burned to rescue any but I did manage to salvage a badge off one. At lunch time I went on the assault course for a quick try out I wish I was that fit these days 😳.
There was another RAF base we went to that I can't remember the name of but it could have been Whittering.
Some Canberra's had just landed and I was weed killing on the aprons now I always remember the planes being a long way from the buildings and I was the only person near them. They even left the door open on it but I was to scared to stick my head in so carried on spraying underneath the plane and just had to a quick look inside.
RAF Cosford?
I'm pretty sure it was here but according to take internet it closed in 1977 ! But anyway I was having a break and there was a wreck of a Phantom I think it was used for training etc. I was stood on one of the wings and an English Electric Lightning not much higher than the hangers flew past at what I suspect was supersonic speed due to the loudest bang I've ever heard I am almost 💩 myself.
RAF ?
This one a can't remember where it was other somewhere on the East coast. There were no planes but it was a Bristol Bloodhound missile base.
I was spraying directly underneath them and the only thing I was thinking of was I hope they don't decide to take off !
RAF ?
And the last one could have been Whittering I was spraying around a load of bunkers it was very tight security we had to go through two or three gates all surrounded by razor wire with lookout towers around.
Looking back I'm pretty sure that these held the nukes but no one said a thing to to us at the time.
I'm sure I saw/experienced more things if I remember them I will add them here.
