Gotta love a raffle. I've always thought these things were neat anyway, so in a fit of something, I started it. It's a nice kit, fit is good so far and since it's got wheels and no tracks, I got pretty far in a couple of hours. IMG_2563 by Russel Baer, on Flick I needed something simple anyway, just a nice little build that I could do by following the instructions, kind of like the Achzarit I did a couple of months ago. This should fit the bill nicely: low parts count, it fits, the instructions seem easy enough to follow and it's French. What else could I want?

I'm gonna back up on some of that stuff I may have said about good fit..... The front and rear hull plates are beveled at the edges, and fit is a little "less than good". Nothing insurmountable, but I'm doing lots of adjusting and having to finish with Vallejo plastic putty. If the putty was any color except white, you'd see a lot more of it at the seams. Only primer will tell.... IMG_2564 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_2565 by Russel Baer, on Flickr All the little rivet heads make it fun too. I may end up having to replace a few if primer shows gaps. These hulls were initially designed to be amphibious so I'm thinking "tight" joins here.

Does it have weld lines?

I don't know, I have absolutely zero references. I'm hoping not actually, if it does it'll be difficult to do. I see a fair amount of bolt heads on the kit at the joints of plates, primarily at the top of the hull sides and top plate union. All the lower hull plates appear to be formed from large plate and it's quite possible there should be weld beads. Good thing the kit lower hull is one piece. Given that the first versions were amphibs, there probably are lots of welds on the lower hull. Also, the main hull is aluminum, so if there are welds, they would be very fine and next to invisible in 1/35 scale. That's my story so far anyway.

Rusty, you are right that there are no visible weld beads on this vehicle. The French did not build it like the WWII Russians did. Even on the real thing, you cannot see weld beads.

Duke, my best buddy in the whole world, thank you! As soon as my Fly Swatter is done (soon, since it's going to ModelFiesta in a week) I'm jumping back in this thing. It's just too cool to let sit, and now that I'm not looking at having to do a zillion inches of tiny weld beads, it'll be so much more fun.

Skipping ahead a bit, this model is ready for paint. I had a few slight fit issues with the turret, nothing major, but I'm interested to see how it looks with primer. OJ, if I look at the real thing, I'll start adding detail and see corrections and details I need to do and it's down the rabbit hole I go. And yes, Steve, I got it for a $2 raffle ticket, good thing too because I saw one at a HobbyTown for $70, which is just stupid high. I've scored big at the last couple of raffles, new to me. I think it's because I've bought at least 10 tickets and hung around until the final drawing, or maybe it's just luck.

And it's ... orange. IMG_3286 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Believe it or not, this is a pretty close match to what's shown on the box art and the painting guide, but it IS French.

That is a unique color that kinda looks wrong, but once you get the other two colors on it; this will start to look right. Looking forward to that!

I agree, it looks "off", but it's such a close match to the panting guide I'm gonna roll with it. Once it's all dusted it should look less like a Halloween decoration.

Just to get back in the saddle, before I try the second color on a Challenger, I pulled this thing out, got it as far as the first shot at color, no clean-up yet: IMG_3479 by Russel Baer, on Flickr It's pretty bright, but a real close match to the color chart in the box.
