Yeah, I know, it's not a pic of a finished model and I am sure there are some that ask "Who Cares?" and some silent types that only use the "Like" button. For those that find kit history interesting here is some on a kit released by AMT back in 1965. Model Car kits were booming and the car customizers were all on board to help make things boom even bigger for all us "Boomers". Some of you might remember this kit, the Surf Woody from George Barris.
It was a pretty wild kit with options galore lots of detail and what was even better it was a model of a real Hot Rod built by Barris. Then around 1968 it was released again with new box art and called a Surf Rod. It included a cardboard scene and box art that I am sure was the work of Dave Wilder at AMT. Pretty much everything else stayed the same with the options and parts.
Then in 1969 someone at AMT got the bright idea to modify the tool and release a hot rod called Denny Mclain's Horse Hide Hauler after the pro baseball pitcher. The ink was barely dry on the box art when Mclain got into some sort of trouble with gambling or something and AMT modified the tool again and in 1970 released the Surf N Van.
I never built the Hauler but I did buy and build the Surf N Van back in the day. It wasn't a bad kit but it was soon modified again into one of AMT's famous sand buggys known as "The Sand Hog". This was the last time this tooling was seen-------until 2003 when RCErtl popped it in its original form as the Surf Woody as one of their Buyers Choice kits.
And now as of late, Round2 has brought it back in its retro packaging as the original. So there you have it, another look at the history of a model car kit with its changes and modifications. One thing to look for on the new releases is a sticker on the lower right. Some are molded in orange and some in white. I would choose white. There may be other color options but I have only seen Orange and White.
