Although this kit is finished I took a ton of picks with the intention of creating a build blog of this build but never got around to it till now. Plus I want to enter my first MOM..LOL
I know this Plane and this kit very well and built it several times so hope you like it.
Airfix spent a lot of time and research developing this kit. There is a video on YouTube about the process from the engineer. if you want to watch it.
I love this kit and the detail is second to none. There are a ton of detail up extras out there but I don't think it needs a thing. Even the tires are unique in the construction. I did however add wiring, hoses and other hardware items.
Tips:
1. Its really important to decide what version you want to build from the start. This mostly effects how the engine bay is displayed. You may not think it matters and you can change your mind later but in one of my builds it went terribly wrong.
2. There is an option to add a motor in the engine to power the prop and you will need to decide if you want to add one or not prior to building the engine. The one from Airfix is long discontinued and very hard to find and way over priced when you can find one. Best bet is a company in England (https://www.magicscalemodeling.com/shop/Hawker-Typhoon-Sound-Motor-Lights-set-Airfix-1-24-p100884075) makes a kit with LED lights, a motor and a sound kit for around $120. I've always wanted to try this out but unless someone pays me to build them one its too much for me.
3. Make sure to follow the instructions carefully when installing the engine into the airframe. Certain parts need to be installed before the engine or you wont be able to reach them later.
4. On this kit I did install an LED light system. Evandesigns.com is my go to guy for LED lights for all of my kits. He has an aircraft model kit that allows you to adjust the flash sequence of each light. After hours of research I was able to locate the correct color and flash timing of the Hawker. I have a video if you want to see it.
5. Buy a decal set. The decals that come with the kit do not soften enough with any kind of softener.
Thats about it. Hope you enjoy the build pics.
I did purchase a decal set.
There is a ton of reference on this plane and I use it often.
Even though the kit comes with a nice figure I don't put pilots in my planes. Too much work not to be seen if a pilots in the way.
I added the aluminum over the fuel tanks based on some old reference photos but ive seen it in red brown too.
This is the LED board I spoke of from Evan Designs. Very simple and easy to follow instructions are included
You will see later I decided not to put a power source in the tail. My client wanted the plane on a powered circle display table so I ran the wires through the bottom of the plane and the runway to the display. The display has control of the lights and the display.
I use testors aluminum buff paint on the undercoat to expose metal in heavily worn areas.
I airbrush all the panel lines in dark grey
I then lightly sand off overspray with a tamiya 3000 grit sanding sponge
I forgot to take a picture of the Yellow chromate. I spray that after the primer layer
Besides the running lights I placed a red light in the footwell of the cockpit.
This is the display base. I used some precut wood strips I got from Walmart.
The martson matting I got long ago and never used it till now. I did make this up. I thought if they wanted to create some kind of drains on the runway this might be a way for it to work. Besides I think it add something different
I age my wood using a mixture of vinigar, coffee grounds, and a torn up steel wool pad. It sits in a mason jar in the sun for bout 3 weeks. Simply brush it on and wipe it off. once dry lightly sand it with 200 grit sand paper. Apply more aging fluid if you want it more aged until happy with the look then seal it all with clearcoat.
Again this is a made up runway so the lines are only there for looks.
I have only been able to find two 1/24 scale figures for the Hawker this one and a African desert pilot wear shorts. I use that one in another build I'll sometime soon.
All done. I added the little wisp of smoke on the pilots cig the last min before the client saw it. He loved it.
Thanks again for the opportunity to share these builds with you guys. You dont know what it means to me to have this outlet. An answer to prayer for sure.
