The Weathering Magazine, Basic. This arrived in the post this morning, neat little magazine with a lot of useful info especially as I'm still learning about acrylics, their uses and what can and can't be used with them. I never realised so many enamels were used for weathering although it makes sense. ππ

And yet, enamels as basic paints are disappearing in favor of acrylics, which is maddening. I've always used enamels for most painting purposes, and my go-to standard brands are all discontinued. That said, there are lots of other materials which are quite useful for weathering. Standard oil paints can be quite useful for things like rain streaks and panel fading, and lately I've taken to using watercolors thickened with a bit of white glue for some washes. Pastels have largely given way to pigment powders, and they too can be useful. Unless sprayed with fixer, though, they aren't very durable at all and handling the model will tend to wear off unfixed pigments.

You will love that magazine!!!

I can't air the room at the moment so I can't use anything too strong,my fixer for today's pigments was very diluted PVA glue which for me has done a satisfactory job

I haven't found his products to have a strong smell like straight enamels so far... maybe Bruce can chime in... I know Mig uses odorless thinners...

I have a wash for dark green vehicles and it smells like normal paint thinners, I was worried it might melt the plastic, it will take off thin acrylics but then again the advice is to cover the area with varnish first to protect the paint when rubbing excess wash off

Yeah he always says to use the clear coat before weathering to save your base layer of paint...

The majority of most of MIGs products are acrylics ( Non Toxic ) and in the SAFE zone for people with allergies and people who don't want to get allergies.

I have the first 10 issues of The Weathering Magazine and can attest that it's an excellent resource. I pull out my back issues for reference and inspiration nearly every model. The only reason I stopped the subscription was because the magazine started to rehash similar techniques and duplicate information I had in other forms. This particular issue looks like an excellent step back to consolidate the basics in a single book. Very nice!

From what I see on here this magazine might be on the basic side especially if you are used to acrylics. I am still learning especially with their use on vehicles. The effects of washes etc on Matt,Gloss or semi gloss bases is just one example. For me definitely worth the money
