I can't stop! Once I got relatively organized, or found stuff I'd forgotten about, it was on. In different stages, a Dragon M4A1(DV), the M4 I had going earlier from mostly Tamiya and MP parts, and a nearly OOB Tamiya M4AE8 with Friuls, which I think I'll finish as a CDA tank with the split loader's hatch and early T23 turret from CDA. I have to say, the new Tamiya Shermans are a complete pleasure to build. Everything fits, excellent detail and a relatively low parts count. I have seven more in the stash. It feels good to build Shermans. I can easily remember back to when the Monogram and Nichimo kits were state of the art. My how things have changed.

Eee gads. I was rummaging around in my old boxes, and got a couple of pleasant surprises. I found a very old conversion using a Verlinden M4A1 DV resin upper hull on a Tamiya M3 Grant lower hull, no turret and missing a few bits. Hmmm.... and then I found a resin ADV/Azimut low bustle Sherman turret, no idea where I got it. It lives! IMG_6141 by Russel Baer, on Flickr And also in the pic, the lower hull from a Tamiya M3 Lee that I decided I'd build, using just as many scrap Sherman bits as I could to make it as accurate as I could (that's a disease right there) and finally use a Panzer Art M3 Lee turret i Bought off ebay, no reason at all. So far I've "removed" the inaccurate lower engine plate and grafted in an Italeri rear hull plate since Tamiya gives you a diesel powered M3 in the kit and I don't want that. I have lots of other goodies for this one, and I suppose I'll buy a Takom M3 before I finish it. And then, just for the sheer fun of it, I pulled out a partially started Italeri T23 turret and grafted in the mantlet from the TamiyaT23 turret in the 'E8 kit. It worked! IMG_6137 by Russel Baer, on Flickr So now I'm going ahead with this one too: a very early M4A3E8, CDA turret with the third lift ring and no MG storage on the turret rear. Since Tamaya supplies the gun tube with a muzzle brake only, I used a collar from an Academy kit, which was easily done. A barrel with no fitting for a muzzle brake would have been "more appropriate" and one may find its way on eventually.

Looks familiar! I've got more than a few of these sorts of projects lying around somewhere, too. Every now and then I come across one and look it over, but so far none has tickled my fancy quite enough to get me to take the project up again in earnest. I'll be interested to see what you make of these mathoms you've found!
