Last night at 9:30pm had a huge black bear walk around the side of the shop by my truck and slowly up the hill... security light came on so I looked to see why and there it was!!! So much for hibernation... Here are the tracks I found this morning... According to the following info this is a very large black bear of 700 to 800lbs... judging by its foot measurement and stride.. Black Bear: The tracks of the hind feet are approximately 3½ to 4 inches wide and 7 inches long, while tracks from the front feet measure approximately 3 to 4 inches across and 4 inches long. Black bears have five toes on each foot, each with a curved, 1¼ inch, nonretractable claw. Average Weight: 250 to 350 pounds (adult male); 120 to 180 pounds (adult female) Average Height: 2 to 3 feet at the shoulder when standing on all four paws; 4 to 6 feet ... Average Length: 4 to 6 feet Compare the size of the footprint to the usual weight range of a black or brown bear. For a black bear, a front paw print 5 inches long is average, equating to an average weight of between 150 and 175 lbs. A 7-inch front print is from a bigger bear -- 300 to 400 lbs. for a black bear. An average weight for a male brown bear is 500 lbs., with a large male bear weighing up to 800 lbs. Brown bear front tracks are between 6 and 8 inches long -- a 6- to 7-inch front track would likely represent a 400 to 500-lb. bear, while an 8-inch front track would indicate a 700 to 800-lb. animal. Brown bear rear tracks are 12 to 16 inch long, with 16-inch tracks representing the heavier bears.

Wow, he looked huge, is that common for you?
Of course living in Southern AZ, I'm not sure what would scare me more, the Bear or the snow.

Jim usually they are more in the 300lb range... we get bears on our property every year cause I have fruit trees but never this late in the year when the fruit is gone and most bears are hibernating... had a rare grizzly earlier this summer but that isn't the norm as we don't have many grizzly bears this far west...

Jed we have a few foxes that come through from time to time, big blue jays and woodpeckers all the time... living by the Columbia river brings many birds, including eagles, osprey falcons, hawks and turkey vultures along with numerous song birds and mountain chickadees!!!

Wow, that is something! I never knew blacks could get that big. Must be an old bear!
In Florida, both my mom and my sister Kat have had Florida black bears try to knock down their backyard fencing; and in the case of my sister, one came up and rang her doorbell. She saw it through her doorbell camera.
Stay safe Joe!

O my...I think I'd have to change pants with a bear in my neighbourhood! In Belgium the wolves have returned in the Ardennes, unfortunately a couple of them got killed by cars.

Oh yeah. Kodiaks are massively huge! But a black bear being 700 lbs when a typical one is around 300' well, that is definitely a big Black!
