For those not in the know, Night Witches were Russian women bombers who bombed the poop out of German lines in WW2. Thing is though, they had the oldest, noisiest, crappiest planes in the entire world. These planes were so noisy that to avoid alerting the Germans hearing them on their approach (and risk facing their anti aircraft guns), these Night Witches would climb up to a certain height, coast down to German positions, drop their bombs, then climb OUT ON THE WINGS OF THE PLANE TO RESTART THEIR ENGINES IN MID AIR, then climb back in and get the the heck out of Dodge. Their leader flew over 200 missions and was never captured. Pilots... Women pilots... Women pilots killing nazis... How is this not taught in every single history class ever? For more information on these amazing women read more here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Witches?fbclid=IwAR30Xu6znSBXWNilKoqganeQx2HpDpYAl4wVmNddrjCBExNQwHo3gXv7d80

If you have Amazon Prime, there is Soviet TV series called Night Swallows based on them...it's not bad...Accurate Miniatures did Lily's Yak-1 a while back...there are loads of the biplane they flew- Polikarpov Po-2 kits out there, but no schemes specific to the Night Witches that I know of...

That is some really awesome History Joe! I hadn't heard about them till now. They need a tribute. Night Witches "Night Witches" was a World War II German nickname for the all female military aviators of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment, known later as the 46th "Taman" Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, of the Soviet Air Forces. Though women were initially barred from combat, Major Marina Raskova used her position and personal contacts with the Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars, Joseph Stalin, to obtain permission to form female combat units. On October 8, 1941, an order was issued to deploy three women's air-force units, including the 588th Regiment. The regiment, formed by Major Marina Raskova and led by Major Yevdokiya Bershanskaya, was composed of primarily female volunteers in their late teens and early twenties. An attack technique of the night bombers involved idling the engine near the target and gliding to the bomb-release point, with only wind noise left to reveal their presence. German soldiers likened the sound to broomsticks and named the pilots "Night Witches".Wikipedia Active: 1942–1945 Country: Soviet Union Branch: Soviet Air Forces Role: Harassment and tactical bombing Nickname(s): Night Witches Engagements: Eastern Front of World War II Decorations: Guards designation, Order of the Red Banner, Order of Suvorov Regimental Commander: Yevdokiya Bershanskaya Deputy Regiment Commander: Serafima Amosova Commissar: Yevdokiya Rachkevich Bomber: Polikarpov Po-2 Wikipedia IMDb
