So apparently my neighbor across the highway has been dealing with a bear every night for the last six days digging through his trash... you would think telling the neighbors would have crossed his mind... nope!!! Last night the bear wandered up my hill and ripped a hinge off my trash shed to take all my cans out and scatter it everywhere as he or she dragged it bag by bag up the hill to eat in private... took one can up there with it when it wouldn't open and stomped it until it finally gave up the ghost! So much fun! Not!!! It is now cleaned up and safely in my garage once again until I come up with a new way to secure my trash storage cabinets... grrrrr!!!

I was nice enough to warn my neighbors which is how I learned Sam was busy picking his up and has been for six days... told him to put it in his locked garage, duh!!! He agreed...

Those pics don't show the bags it dragged way up the hill to tear apart along with the other can...

Agreed...and that might get dangerous. If the authorities don't already know that there's a bear prowling around the neighborhood, they need to know that. Bears are something we don't get here in the middle of suburban Portlandia. Eagles, red tail hawks, barn owls, blue herons and more regularly patrol the skies. Never seen a coyote in the neighborhood, but have seen them just a few miles away along the main highway to the coast. Beaver & nutria are constant nuisances in the urban stream corridors too. Nutria get killed; beavers get relocated. But none of the critters I've just listed has a realistic probability of inflicting harm to a human...black bears are another matter entirely.

Trash cans have been relocated to a much more secure area... if he comes back again I will call Fish and Wildlife and have them remove it... I get bears in the fall for my upper orchard but never this time of year. Luckily my son works for F&W!!!

Interesting. Stay safe Joe. My mother in Florida has had a bear stop by her place a couple times. Fortunately, she wasn't hurt or anything. Still a bit scary though, especially considering the same bear showed up at my sister's place a few blocks away too.

Wow! Raccoons are about the worst we have to deal with. They don’t drag the bags off, so cleanup is localized!

Moving the cans seems to have stopped the issue, no damage this morning, or else it has a major bellyache and is up in the woods using my name in vain, lol!!!
