More whackin' and hackin', end result to be a Six Day War M48, possibly a straight up M48A3 in IDF sand with a Sherman cupola. Raw materials: And so far, basic hull, fenders whacked off, wheels started.
Another junkbox special!

I'll watch this, given I'm doing one of these in this scale. Of course, mine won't measure up to this incredible masterpiece but it will be fun to watch!

You guys....... gee whiz. So, I spoke too soon regarding my end result. I got reminded that all Magach 3's had the 105mm gun, and since I really wanted to do one with the 90mm gun, I broke open the Monogram M48A2C and hacked out the proper engine covers and grafted then into the Academy hull. I'll probably not do that again. After losing two of the return roller mounts per side, I'm back on track, and I'll be ending up with a proper 6 Day War Magach 2C. So far: IMG_9147 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Getting those covers in was a royal pain, don't look too close. On a side note, I was surprised at how toy-like the Monogram M48 kit is. I thought it was pretty good back when I built a couple as a teenager.

Ah, the joys of the old Tamiya motorized hulls. Lots of filling, sanding and plugging huge holes for parts. I've added some detail the the swing arm mounts, mainly for visual interest: if I tried to "correct" them, I'd be here the rest of my life. I also mounted the final drives (Dragon) and drive sprockets (Tamiya, mud holes added by me). IMG_9149 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_9148 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Lots of big holes on the hull front too, gotta love it.

Isn't that why you bought the kit Russ? So you could improve it?

Tremendous work here! It is this attention to detail that will make this another Masterpiece.

Well, it was cheap, and with the Dragon kits out and rumors of an AFV Club M48, they're getting cheaper, and I had/have lots of spare parts from other kits, and lots of old AM stuff, and I like it..... Gee whiz, I could go on, but honestly, I could have built the Dragon kit already, but where's the fun in that? Lots of these kits were state of the art when I got back into modeling about 25 years ago, and I struggled with a few things back then that I'm enjoying now. Plus, all the AM stuff that's out there now is mind boggling.

Absolutely! While I really like the level of detail in most new kits, I think I have more fun doing a real whack job like this one. I could be weird though. I was talking to a couple of guys at the San Antonio show, and when I started telling them about all the different kits and bits I used to build the fictional Magach and the 6C, their eyes kind of glazed over. I dunno......

I tried something on the swing arms I should have thought of long ago, rounding the edges to make them at least resemble the real things. I think it worked well enough I'll do it on every other Academy/Tamiya M60/48 I do from now on, and I wish I'd thought of it earlier, I really do. IMG_9580 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I also worked on the idler mounts a little, but most of them will be covered by fenders.Assoon as I get really tucked into this thing, Tamiya or AFV Club or Takom will release a good M48.

T'anks all. Duke, I think so too. The Dragon kits are good, I just don't like a lot of things about them, but that's just me. I much prefer Tamiya or Takom kits, especially now that I use 3x reading glasses under a 4x Optivisor.....

More stuff: suspension finished out, and for grins, I fitted the wheels to see what it looks like.... russ images 3.4.20.2 by Russel Baer, on Flickr No wheels: Russ images 3.4.20 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Fenders will probably be next, and I expect there'll be lots of white stuff involved as the Dragon fenders will be rough to make work.
