In my introduction I mentioned I have quite a bit of walnut. More than I'll ever use probably. Most is 4/4" to 10/4". Took a couple pics for your reference. In case you are not familiar how wood thickness is measured 4/4 is 1 inch thick. 6/4 would be 1-1/2 inches thick, 8/4 is 2 inches, etc. These are various widths and lengths. They were rough cut when I got them. I borrowed a planer from a guy at work. A planer is on my want list, just not in my budget list. I edged them on my table saw and cut the ends on my compound mitre saw. I've made a few boxes out of it. I've been routing the long ends to hide the side piece cut ends. I tried to show this in pic 3. I'd like to do something better but I'm not sure what or how. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I don't have a dove tail or finger joint template for my router as that would be one solution. If you click on the pics they should get really large.

Thanks JCON. The box is Ok but I know I could do better. Bad part is my airbrush and model kit addictions have put woodworking at #3 on my list. There just ain't enough money. It will become a priority again at some point. That is when I will probably get a dovetail-finger joint kit. It is probably my box building answer.

A jig, an oscillating spindle sander, a better router table, a newer scroll saw to replace the two older ones I have...
I like working with wood, and hey, I can still count to ten. That's one of the the most important things.

Woodworking just seems to be natural thing. Working with something that has a unique look, no matter how many times you cut the same dimensions. Walnut is one the best looking pieces of wood there is, IMHO.

If I can post this, I would be more than happy to trade or sell some of this walnut. I posted my model interests in my Introduction page. You have to scroll down a bit to find it. Or, let me know what you might have, it could be something that piques my interest. I could also use some hard maple in these same basic sizes. Send me a PM please. If the trade/sell mention breaks a forum rule please delete this part. I made the Pinewood Derby cars my son raced when he was in the scouts (yeah, I was one of THOSE Dad's). The Warrior took the Best Looking Car award. First pic is at rest, second is how it looked when it ran. The Warrior, the snake and the edge are made from aromatic cedar. It is one of my favorite woods and I like the smell. I also started two of my favorite race cars. He got too old to race so I never finished them. Porsche 917-10 and a UOP Shadow 101. (The Shadows wing is not installed on the car, just stood there for the pic). These are, somewhat, auto related.

No rule against trading or selling stuff amongst members... the forum isn't responsible for issues or problems though... there is an area towards the bottom of the forum called marketplace where you can put a post with your wood and kits for sale or trade... just start a new post and away you go!!!

Nice cars... we always had a rule that the kids had to do 80% of the build or it was disqualified... for Dad's like you and I there was a Dad's Customs catagory where you could enter against other Dads! Ha, ha, ha!!! Made it more fair for the boys without Dad's who had great shops and woodworking expertise... some of the ugliest blocks of wood would win some years but they all had fun!!!

Thanks for the Ok on the walnut. Some forums only allow model related stuff so I thought I'd ask. I have more of this than I probably need. I had seen the market place on my first look through the forum. Gotta check to see if anything I look for was available.
Our troop didn't have a Dad race. I'm sure that most of the cars that ran weren't 80% done by the scout. I just got really into it.

Even granddads get into pinewood derby! I helped my grandson and his dad two years in a row. He won his first year!

I would take my scroll saw to the meetings and teach the less fortunate kids how to use it to cut their cars from the wood block (it is a great first power tool to learn on)... that was really rewarding and got some kids into woodworking.

That is a pretty cool thing you did for the kids. A scroll saw would be a good first power tool. I wasn't a troop leader but I helped the guys get their woodworking badges making tool boxes. I had cut the pieces out but they got to stain, sand and assemble them.

It was just an old 16" Craftsman saw that I still use today... first real stationary tool I bought some 40+ years ago... they don't build tools to last like they used too!!! Still have my original hand Jig saw in mustard yellow too that still runs well.

I have a couple old Craftsman scroll saws. A 16" and a little 13" Craftsman. I had used a friends scroll saw about 15 years ago and did really good work on it. Don't remember the brand . I would like to update them to one with easier blade changes. The Craftsman's I have can be aren't always easy. You're right on the old tools built to last. Not like today.

I bought an aftermarket set of blade holders and changed the Sears one to pinless blades right after I bought it so they change really easy and I can do tight inside cuts that way.

My 16 uses pinless. I don't know if it's a Craftsman set or after market. It just isn't easy and it's very frustrating. That's why I haven't been using it. If you know the MFG of yours please let me know. Let me know the model number of your scroll saw too, if you don't mind.
