Laugh or cry depends on the car and the coverage.

I had an Oldsmobile Omega in 1974. It had a floor shift automatic transmission. I had a habit of driving with my left hand, while resting my right hand on the shifter. One day, I was cruising down the road, doing about 45 or 50 MPH. I hit a bump, and my right hand shoved the shifter into "R". Talk about "HOLY BAT TURN!"

It had me worried about the transmission for a while!

After that, I eased over a speed bump in a parking lot, and jammed the transmission linkage. Couldn't get the thing all the way into "Park". Had to set the e-brake. Also, couldn't get the key out. All of that bidniz required a trip to the dealership service department!!!

That was in '74. It was a '74 Oldsmobile, so it didn't hurt, much. I was a bit rough on that little car. A shame, too, cause it was a nice car!
