Hey guys! II have two mustangs that I'm going to be starting soon. One is the '67 GT Fastback and the other is a '68 Shelby GT-500. Here's what I want to do and wondered if it's possible: (I will be using spray cans for now)
- On the Shelby, I am painting it a metallic charcoal with black racing stripes running up the center. On the stripes, I would love to have the word Shelby painted on. Was thinking maybe I could put down the black, then somehow do the lettering and then clear coat it?
- On the GT, I am painting it a gloss metallic black. On the hood, I would love to have a very subtle pony inlaid in the paint.
Any ideas appreciated!

Somehow you will have to mask it and spray it... I'm not that good at masking... maybe someone else has a better plan...

Let me think on it a bit, Scott. There should be a way.

One guy I know who did something similar to your idea for a Mustang silhouette painted the base color of straight black on first; then applied the silhouette pattern mask. Then he shot the metallic color on it. Then before he removed the silhouette mask, he very carefully sprayed very fine and very faint white all around the edge; giving the silhouette an ever so faint "glow" around it outlining the design.
Just an idea. I'm sure some real car builders will be along shortly to give a better idea.

If you use the method Mark mentioned on the black Mustang, I'd paint a dark charcoal metallic base first, mask the pony, then shoot the black on top of the charcoal metallic. When you carefully peel off the mask, it will leave a dark charcoal metallic pony on the car. That's a very good method Mark suggested.
On the first one, simply paint the car and the black stripes, add a Shelby decal to the stripes, then shoot a clearcoat over all of it. That works for a variety of decal applications, and it should look as if the name was painted on.
I hope this helps, and model on!!
