Okay, so I found the camera software yesterday and tried to load it onto this new fangled laptop. Turns out the software is too old to use... goshdarn (or words to that effect).
I'll have to start saving for a more modern camera. My current one turns out to be 2.1 Megapixel, less powerful than most mobile phone cameras these days!

Actually, you don't need any camera software. All you need is the USB to camera cord. Once you have it plugged in to both, the computer should recognize it and you can transfer your pix to the PC. I'd suggest using a photo hosting site like Photobucket and uploading from the PC to PB and posting your pix from there to here using the image code line. Camera age has nothing to do with it.

My camera uses a model-specific memory card and has no USB socket for a direct connection to the PC. Believe me gramps, i've explored every avenue when it comes to using my current (very old) camera.
Whilst I still have the old PC set-up i'll continue to load the images onto that and transfer them to PB or burn them to disc and load them onto the laptop.
Thanks for the advice though.

Can you use a card reader to transfer data?

Can you use a card reader to transfer data? You certainly can. I use the one in my printer/scanner all the time. Before that I had a Dazzle USB reader.

That's unusual that you have a camera that's model specific. Most of them use either SD or XD cards. Those are the most common, but I know there's a whole list of different cards. I guess if there's no cord connection on the camera you're stuck. Just out of curiosity how are connecting that card to your old PC ? I know that just about all older PCs didn't have built in card readers like the new PCs do. My old Dell 8300 is about 10 yrs old and there's no card reader in it. I do have a reader unit from another PC that'll fit in mine that has slots for smart media/XD, MMC/SD Compact flash I/II memory stick pro and a USB 2.0. The only problem is there's no plug for it on my mother board so it's pretty much useless.

I should have pointed out that the camera uses a card reader device that connects via USB, hence no USB port on the camera itself. It's a Kodak machine, card and associated software that only works up to WIN2000. As for my old PC, that was bought new in 1998. It was updated from its original Pentium II to a PIII processor and even that was stretching the motherboards abilities. Loading a photo onto PB became impossible and opening my email account could take up to 7 minutes! Thank the gods for modern technology, the novelty still hasn't worn off.

If you connect it directly from the reader via USB to your new PC it will automatically recognize it as a new mass storage device and it will either open it for you or give you the option of viewing contents. If it doesn't, go to MY Computer and double click it. Once it's open look for either E or F drive or it may say Mass storage device. C drive is your HD and D is going to be your CD/DVD player. Once you find it, either double click it or right click it and tell it to open. After it opens you can copy or move any picture there to your PC. It HAS to recognize anything plugged into a USB port, no matter how new or old your PC is.

I've tried everything (and more) to get the pc to recognise the card reader to no avail. It doesn't recognise it when plugged in and no amount of searching yeilds a happy result. Maybe because it's not an SD card but Compact Flash? I don't know and it's now become too much hassle to even bother. I'll stick to using the old pc to transfer pics to the laptop until we get a new camera.

It doesn't make any difference what type of card it is, unless the data is in a format that the PC can't read. Then it'll bring up a window telling you it can't open this file and ask you if you want to go to the web to find a program that'll work on it. Now if you only have the reader plugged in, it won't see it, but when you insert the card in the reader it has to see it. There's something screwy about this.

I went to the Kodak web shite and downloaded the appropriate software (updated version of) for the usb compact flash card reader but it is only supported up to Win2000 and WILL NOT work with anything newer. Any driver you load will simply fail for the above reasons. The associated Kodak Easyshare photo software will work but if you try to load images into it from the USB port it doesn't show anything connected. The same happens when I simply plug the card reader into the pc (yes, I had the card in the reader too). The pc will not recognise the reader on its own and if you look for it via the pc's files etc it will not show up.
I appreciate all the advice on this matter but as I said before, i'll stick to the method that does work until a suitable replacement is forthcoming.

Okay npw this is becoming very tedious... I know how to post a picture because i'm not the only one seeing the spork above, but i'm unable to post any from one particular album in my PB account. They've been shrunk down as far as the second smallest size with no joy, yet other images can be posted?!
Anyone got any useful hints?

Santeras, if you move or rename any picture in PB, it will not show and the ones you have posted earlier will disappear. So, click the IMG code window then go to the forum and right click paste. Also have had problems using MSN, so try using Fire Fox or Google browsers when uploading and downloading pics. Hope this helps.
