Began this a couple days ago
007 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr
I went with the Academy M-3 'cause I wanted an interior given the display in mind. Too bad the Takom kit does not offer this
006 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr
Upper and lower hull mating will be difficult, the first of at least three glue and clamp stages
008 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr
This is an interesting mix of old style and new style Academy...some of it is really nice and some of it ain't so hot
Regards, Mark

Thanks gents
Ernie the fit isn't as much of a problem as I may have suggested altho it does add extra time to do the glue, clamp, and dry squash it all together method I am fond of

Time to start the M-31 while primer cures

Thanks Duke I am never short of projects
The Takom M-31 lessee what can I say
Well molded from a softer grey plastic which I love as LPC bonds it very well. Minimal mold lines so far with roadwheel gates on the very edge so no sanding roadwhells needed. Fit is a bit sketchy in a couple of spots such as the final drive housings
003 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr
but not a deal breaker. The suspension has 17 parts per bogie
004 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr
and has significant flash on the knockout pin marks.

Here's the mess waiting for glue to cure before final bogie assembly

So far so good. They did a pretty good job of engineering this one

Cheers gents
M-31 complete except the boom cables. I'll let glue cure and fool with the cables tomorrow

According to Takom some of these had a soft edge tan camo pattern on them. Not sure if I'm gonna try to do this as it may be painful what with all the tight angles and stuff that stick up everywhere. We'll see how cocky I feel on paint day

You had me with the North Africa title. Looking good with both kits. I've got Takom's M3 Mid Lee so I'll be able to see how it goes together.

Thanks blokes
Got primer on the M-31 and some weathering done on the M-3. The latter will probably get faded a bit more, and my pinwash seems to have disappeared under successive layers. Here's my plan for layout
001 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr
I put the Academy bandie tracks on the M-31. Takom's reasoning here does not make sense; you have to build a semi articulatable suspension yet they give you rigid link and length tracks so you cannot take advantage of the former feature. Dumb.
By means of replacement I acquired a set of ModelKasten M-4 workable tracks for the M-3. This gives me the option of modeling not only an articulated suspension but also a blown track, probably on the left side. Driving worn tanks over rocks will result in such a problem. The assembly breaks down to eight parts per link
003 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr
This shows enough parts for four links
004 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr
Gonna be a grind doing these but it should be worthwhile in the end

Wow, seeing that makes me glad I only build in 1/72 scale. Don't think I could handle that. I'll savor watching a Master at work here.

Cheers gents
So after completing one run of the MK tracks they pretty much came apart when I tried to test fit them. After the third time this happened I was compelled to use the garbage bucket fix and went back to bandies which don't lend themselves well to a broken track, so I decided to model a partially thrown track instead. The 31 has been basecoated and two faded OD filters have been applied, here's the duo to date
006 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr
The thrown track should look OK. Basic base layout and size
001 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr
Waiting for additional goodies from ScaleHobbyist for completion
Regards, Mark
