I apologize if this has been asked, but from a still-noob here, do you guys have favorite brands/manufacturers you prefer? So far, I've worked on several Revell and liked them. I have also built finished one AMT and am working on an AMT/ERTL one. My F-16 is academy. As I've built these, I had a lot of issues getting the waterslide decals to actually slide off on the Revell but the parts fit like a glove. The AMT ('53 ford) had some issues with parts going together, but the decals were a breeze! The monster truck so far is by far the one where the parts have fit the best (haven't tried any decals yet). Looking at the Academy model, I don't like the instructions. Not as clear on some of the coloring as the others.
As of now, I'm not being choosy. People are giving me models, so I'm accepting them graciously and having a ball building them!

I have built all kinds of kits and each has their quirks or go together like a glove... Tamiya are almost always great fitting kits but there is always that odd one that just gives you fits... AMT and MPC are tougher builds for the most part than Monogram or Revell but there are some real gems out there you can't get anywhere else. I have had the worst luck with Hasegawa decals, they just shatter in the water on me and I end up with aftermarket decals or make my own but the kits themselves were nicely detailed and went together well. Trumpeter has lots of small parts but I like their kits very much. Minicraft older kits can be pure nightmares to assemble but the newer ones have been wonderful. On the decal issue with Revell use warm water and they seem to slide better after letting them sit for a little while! I'm sure I could come up with more but that is about it for now... I'm sure others would totally disagree with some of what I said as we are all individuals with different ways of doing things and different ideas of what is a challenge to us. Just go have fun and if you find something you don't like ask for help here as some of the guys may have the perfect solution for you!

There are good and bad in just about every box you open. Even the same brand, such as AMT, can have kits that are more difficult than some of their other offerings. I remember, as a lad, the Monogram and Revell kits seemed a bit more difficult to build than AMT and MPC. Of course, I can only talk about automotive kits, as I haven't built very many military kits in my days. If you take your time, you should be able to overcome most of the issues in a kit. Don't forget to ask the members here for help.

Now that is what I was saying, I started with Monogram and thought they were easier then AMT and MPC, MRC were the hardest as they were super detailed...

most times I'm learning is patience is my biggest hangup. I don't like having too many projects open at once--always liked finishing one before starting another, but with my models, I have had several going. When I get hung up on one, I switch for a little bit.

That is the joy of modeling!!! Easy to switch when you get hung up or loose interest in a subject... you can always go back when you are ready!

I have built mostly Dragon and Tamiya armor.I like Tamiya and Hasegawa aircraft.I have built Tamiya, Hasegawa, and Trumpeter ships. That being said, every manufacturer can have clunkers.I usually try to Google kits for build reviews or blogs.Tamiya,Hasegawa, and Eduard are usually pretty reliable, but I still like to read up 1st.

Dam, i don't think anyone ever has given me a model (family wise). They all think its a dumb-butt hobby. My family is the kind that expects you to be just like them or your an outcast lol.
But anywhoo My preference in no particular order
Moebius Revell Tamiya Aoshima Meng Amt Old "Ertl and Monogram" before Amt merged with Ertl and Revell Merged with Monogram. Tamiya
Paint wise again in no special order
Testors bottle paints (enamel) the older ones are better. They changed there formula and they see thinner now. Tamiya paints (again the older ones) They changed theres as well and its thinner now and almost un-brushable Model Master (Acryl and Enamel) AK Interactive Vallejo Apple Barrel paints. The ones you find in the craft section at Walmart for like 50 cents. I have over 100 colors of these in a spinning wire metal rack. I maily use them for engine and interior work. If you brush them it takes two of more coats. Alot of ppl airbrush them, Now i have a Paasche H Complete set but my compressor is kinda old and tempermental so I havent really experimented with thinning these paints yet. I need a new compressor before I do this.
Spray Paint wise
Tamiya Testors One Coat Laquer (cool colors) Krylon Duplicolor
Thats about it from my bench or closet door on top of an old desk lol

Why do that Ben? I always follow the cardinal rule: Do as I say, not as I do! haha! one of these days when I start my YouTube channel, I'm going to re-enact all 13 (so far) broken bones, the shredded knee and ankle, the severed finger and the hammered leg as a "Don't do this" channel. haha! I'm sure by the time I start that channel, all those numbers will be higher!

My kids do a good job of not following my example. All three of my girls have broken one of their wrists, and not one of them did it in the same way I did. haha!
