This is the main project I have been working on, the old Revell Monogram Cylon Raider. The original model was released 40 years ago, man do I feel old Inever got one back then, but it is a kit I have always wanted to build, so got one off Ebay a few weeks back.
The kit is not really bad, in fact it captures most of the details of the filming miniature, but some areas need work, like the wide open exhausts and openings on the rear of the upper hull. The fit is also not great, and I have spent a lot of time trying to get that squared away.
The first thing to do though was make bulkheads to block off the wide open exhausts.....
I used some old photo etched mesh to kind of add some texture to the plain sheet plastic bulkheads
Next up I made mounting pins for the "box fans" Monogram provides for the exhaust. Fortunately, there are holes in the back of each one in the center , so I measured the bulkheads and marked the center of each, drilled a hole and used a piece of plastic rod to make the mounting pin.
And how it should work out. I can stick the bulkheads in and paint them, and paint the "box fans" separately and add them after the rest of the model is painted.
I also made bulkheads for the openings in the upper hull. These were simply painted flat black as not much will be seen of them, I just wanted to get rid of the open view into the model.
The front panel on the kit has this section that just hangs down below the nose, kind of like a thin plate just hanging there. It is probably correct, but I just thought it look kind of dumb, so I boxed it in with strip plastic, at least now it looks more robust and like it belongs there.
Still lots of work to do on the seams, and the paint arrived in the mail yesterday, so .........just need to buckle down and get the sanding done
