This build was completed years back but I was able to finish the painting/weathering just last week. I think I was able to post some WIP and pictures of the painted model in the LEM before. This was done using the a modified Tasca M4A1 mid hull, scratched turret and some leftover accessories from my other sherman builds (skirts, tools, etc). I have always been fascinated with the Skink and Robert a.k.a. Shermanfreak from the LEM encouraged me to build one. It was very fulfilling to be able to build a replica of it although there maybe a lot of accuracy issues here. References for this version of the sherman are very scarce.🤔 Since these never actually saw combat, I opted for minimal weathering. Funny thing is that when I pulled this out last night to be photographed, some sections started to fall apart. 😟 Luckily I was able put it together again although there are telltales of the damage. 😥 Anyway comments and suggestions are most welcome.

Hey it is good to know that one saw combat.
Your build looks great.
I heard about the resin conversion way back but it was not available in my part of the world. 😁
So I had to scratch my turret.
Thanks for showing your Skink.

If anyone else on here has done one, then that accounts for all of them. Only three were ever completed and only one sent to the ETO for trials. Only ten turret castings were made; the prototype turret was a welded-plate job. Unfinished turret castings were scrapped; most were probably melted down. In 2003, two castings were found on a cadet rifle range in Vernon, British Columbia, both painted light blue with two red diagonal stripes. They had been used as targets for decades without anyone cottoning on to what they really were. One now resides in the collection of the Lord Strathcona's Horse regiment in Edmonton and the other is held by the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. Photos of those castings helped me refine the shape of the turret.

I suppose that skinks in east central BC are similar to yours, Joe...perhaps that's where the inspiration came from for the blue with red stripes paint job. You can see traces of the original Olive Drab beneath the blue & red on the surviving casting. The white patches may be yet another coat between the original finish and the current one, or simply the result of sun & abrasion on the current colors. The underside is uniformly rusty, so that are was probably embedded in the soil on the range. In any case, the triangular gussets under the bustle were a revelation when I first saw these, so I included them in my model. I suspect that they are runners for the mold to ensure that molten material filled the bustle. It's possible that they were machined off on finished castings, but the few photos extant from WW2 don't confirm that. In peacetime, I'm sure that they would be machined off. In wartime, I doubt it. They wouldn't cause problems with traverse, which is all that would really matter, and despite the project gradually losing priority for production machining those off would be a step that could be safely omitted to speed things up.

Nice work on those Skinks guys! I always wanted to do one in 1/72 scale. Just never had the right references, skills or accessories to do it.
