I did this to show ppl on another site how to do mahogany. I used red oxide primer as a base
Next I used some artist acrylic paint and just washed some raw sienna on.
Next I used a little thicker wash of burnt umber on to get something that was streaked. If it gets a little to heavy take your finger and just smear it a little. All you're tryin ta do is create some light and dark areas.
Next take a little heavier burnt umber and streak or dry brush some grain on to give ya the effect of grain. If it doesn't look right to ya just add some more raw sienna and do it again.
Once ya get it to look ok let it dry and clear coat it with some lacquer. and that's all there is to it.
Doin oak is very similar over a yellowish tan base, and some yellow oxide and burnt sienna mixed to get a little darker tone. It's really a matter of taste. If it looks good, go for it. After you get it close, you can take a little stronger burnt sienna and add some highlights here and there.
