To continue Joe's explanation about Secret Santa, we would start a Thread at the end of September with a description of the Secret Santa program and a price limit for that year. It was generally about $20.00 to $25.00 dollars. If you chose to go over that, that was all you; but for the most part everyone stayed in the limit. This would only work if an even number of people signed up.
Everyone who wished to participate would post their name and their preferences on model kits: e.g. '1/72 scale armor' or 1/48 scale aircraft' etc. That way someone who only builds 1/48 scale would not get something in 1/72 scale. Nor would a 'plane only' guy get armor or ships. One surprise I had was that when I listed 1/72 scale armor only, I got a 1/72 scale kit of a Nutrocker tank from the SF3D universe. It's a science fiction tank, but I built it anyway and it still sits pride of place in my collection. After all, it did fit my criteria as 1/72 scale armor! LOL!
Names were drawn by a mod assigned around the first of October and notifications were sent out then.
We then set up a Thread for Secret Santa where everyone would post a pic of their UNOPENED Secret Santa box to show that they had received it. Everyone was encouraged to show themselves in the pic with the box. Once everyone got their box, we all arranged to be online on December 23rd or 24th (mostly December 23rd, although one year it was December 22nd) to post pics of our Secret Santa presents as they were being opened. The order of pics was like this: The unopened package, then the gift wrapped package inside; then the final reveal of the actual present. A day or so later, the Secret Santa Group Build Thread was started.
It was always great fun and exciting to see everyone's presents. Sometimes it almost felt to me as if we were all in the same room as I refreshed the page and watched more presents being revealed and seeing the comments of everyone still watching the same thread. This was also a great program for some modelers like me who don't get modeling presents from anyone on Christmas unless we buy them ourselves.
There was one time in the third or fourth year we did this when someone threw something extra in with the Secret Santa present. It was a large sock with "Merry Christmas" written on it to make it a 'Christmas stocking' and it made the rounds for several years. Whoever got it had to take a picture of it next to the present during Opening Day. Then the following year, they were supposed to pack it in the box with their Secret Santa present to send to someone else. It was always a blast to see who got it that Christmas! That sock crossed this country at least twice if not more often.
My apologies for hijacking this Thread. Harley; once again, you did a fantastic job on this tiny model.
