I have to admit, up until maybe six months ago, my knowledge of board games was limited to Monopoly, Sorry, Scrabble, and games from that time frame. I could list literally 100 games, but they are not what I'm talking about.
About 6 months ago I started watching Pluto TV on Roku. Basically, this is a bunch of internet TV stations in one location. One of those channels (Geek & Sundry) shows episodes of a YouTube program called Tabletop. Tabletop is a program hosted by Wil Weaton from Star Trek TNG and The Big Bang Theory where he hosts people playing board games. The program is AWESOME!
Anyway, I started buying and playing board games and it really brings back the feelings of games from the past...far more than video games.
My favorite games right now are Terraforming Mars, Pandemic, and Scythe.
Chime in with your thoughts...

Robert welcome to the world of board games. At Hobby Day we have a couple people who bring in a literal truckload of board games for people to try out. While not heavily into board games, I have enjoyed a couple train games, Leviathan, Starship Troopers, and another one where the players are crew on a damaged and sinking sub that they have to fix as things fall apart around them. I have seen Terraforming Mars and Pandemic demonstrated at San Diego's Comicon and found them interesting but have yet to try them so far. Another board game I am eager to try is Firefly as that is one of my favorite Sci-Fi shows. I have actually painted the miniatures for several board games that have truly enhanced the game play for the people who have played them.

Carcassonne is also in my growing collection as well as the other three "foundation" gateway games; Alhambra, Ticket to Ride, and Catan -- I love them all.
Yesterday, the UPS driver showed up with two more games; Mage Knight and Castle Ravenloft, the first of the D&D Board Game System offerings. I've seen both played online and think I'll enjoy both of them. Additionally, they both come with OUTSTANDING miniatures which I will definitely be painting and posting here!!!

I've been a board wargamer for decades...You can see a few dozen of them in these two pics. ORIGINAL SQUAD LEADER!!! on the top shelf! When I was overseas (USAF) in 1985 or so, two of us would start a game on Friday after work, play continuously until falling asleep, get up, and play ALL DAY Saturday. If it was a particularly large set-up (using most of the expansions), we'd continue on through the entire day on Sunday as well...what a great set of games. The only game I have left from that era is The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.

Yeah, I have all of the original SL, but only the rulebook and one module for ASL. Got too expensive, and I drifted to other priorities than collecting a lot of games. I still buy them occasionally, and play regularly. I'm currently Marine General Holland "Howlin' Mad" Smith, invading Saipan in the new fame The Bloody Rock. We're doing the free set-up version, and I chose different invasion beaches. Day two and I'm ahead of schedule, having captured Aslito airfield already and taken fewer casualties than we did historically.
Midway, seen at the bottom, was my very first game purchase. I was ten at the time, so that was 45 years ago!

Robert we have almost all those Advanced Squad Leader games at our Knights of Columbus Hall where the St. Crispin's Irregulars meet. Most of them are still in pristine condition.
I've also played Ticket to Ride; that was the railroad game I couldn't remember.
