I just got done stripping some chrome off the '58 tree using my trusty stand by Krud Kutter and some of the pieces have a yellowish film on them. I do believe this was mentioned on another thread but lord knows I can't find it. How do I get it off and/or does it affect painting over it. I've tried lacquer thinner but it doesn't do much.

Cliff, that coating is on there to help in the chrome process, I believe. Personally, I don't try to remove it. I just paint over it. If you want to try a piece of scrap, you might dunk it in a little brake fluid, or Castrol Super Clean, or some of the other products that builders use to remove botched up paint jobs.

I hear it's a lacquer clear coat from what I'm reading...

Simple Green cleaner supposedly takes it off after soaking in it...

I have always used ammonia to de-chrome (ypu get a lot for little $)...the yellow bonding stuff has always flaked off by using an old toothbrush..............

I have run into this as Joe said. I've had some success using Tamiya's X-20A to remove it. You don't need to worry about it though, enamels and lacquers stick to it just fine.

Thanks Jeff, I thought you had this issue on the Chevy Gasser Build...

Actually it was the chrome itself that was such a pain on that one.

I've been having great luck, lately with the bleach for the chrome. Some of the parts have the yellow coating when they come out, and some don't. Must be a difference in kitmakers' processes.
