Hey Everyone,
Because of the way several of the recent Group Build (GB) proposals have progressed and the discussions therein, I wanted to put together this thread to gauge the feelings of the membership and get some feedback on everyone's thoughts and ideas regarding this subject. This is NOT intended to be an argument for or against any particular stance, but hopefully an avenue to help everyone - myself included - understand everyone's point of view. I hope everyone will take the statements made in this thread in the spirit of understanding.
Since I am the one starting this thing, I suppose it's only fair that I go first...okay.
First of all, I want to state that I believe a GB has a specific, well-intentioned purpose: Enabling one to enhance their enjoyment, knowledge, and skill by participating in a limited and focused build with other modelers who share their interests. In a nutshell, I think that pretty much sums up my definition of a GB's purpose. (Your definition may vary)
When I first started getting back into modeling - around 2002 - there were really very few modeling forums. Many were non-specific in modeling terms (like FSM) while others were focused primarily on one genre (like Armorama). In those days the most common GB's were one's with MUCH greater focus than today. I can recall a GB on Armorama where either 3 or 4 modelers were all building the exact same new release kit of a certain tank. There was a GB on FSM where something like 14 people were all building an F-4 Phantom. And does anyone here remember "Mad Tiger Day"? I participated in that GB where about 12 of us all built a 1/72 scale Tiger I (any manufacturer) in just 24 HOURS!!! THAT was an extremely fun, creative, and most importantly, focused GB.
EDIT Number 2: As evidenced by the 140 views and only three responses of any length, it is apparent that the membership at large either has little interest in this subject or was put off by my lengthy opening. It is also very apparent from the three responses from the Administrators below that my post was misunderstood and/or misinterpreted as being posted through frustration, dissatisfaction, or anger with this forum. Therefore, I have completely redacted the bulk of my comments, but will leave the remainder active just in case someone chooses to visit or respond.
Anyway, what I'd like to see here is some honest feedback on your views regarding GB's. I also hope that through this discussion we will better understand why modelers feel the way they do about GB's in general and what we'd like to see here on the OSM. Who's next???
EDIT: As a point of clarification, I neither have a current GB proposal nor am I implying that there are not enough proposals being made. On the contrary, I think the current pace of proposals bodes well for the site. I am simply seeking other opinions on the subject, nothing more.
