Way back in 1976, I was a 6th grader living in Hampton VA. My dad read about a plastic model contest at a local hobby shop in the daily paper, and bought me a Revell 1/32 scale Hawker Typhoon. I had never competed in model contests before, and was real hesitant, but my dad convinced me. I entered the model at the hobby shop called Dynamic Hobbies, in Newport News, VA. I won 1st place and received a huge trophy and a $50.00 check from the owner. We moved to York County in 1977, but by then, the hobby shop had went out of business. I went to work at Dynamic Engineering Inc., in 1984. My dad had worked there temporarily while on strike from the NN Shipyard, and had called up to get me an interview. On the first day of work, the President, Tom Strom walked up to me and shook my hand to welcome me. Lo and behold, I recognized him as the owner of the LHS! I asked him if he remembered me at the contest back in 1976. He did, and told me I entered the Typhoon. I think it cool that the hobby I loved from childhood was a stepping stone to the 34 year career I have enjoyed as a model maker, and that Tom was a part of both worlds. And I have my dad to thank for it all. Incredible.
