This may be my oldest shelf queen, if I count in that the tracks came from an OOB build 20 years ago.... I built the original kit, OOB, then added Friuls later on (maybe 15 years ago?) but didn't like the thing, so I grabbed another kit at a show and got after "fixing" the glacis. Tamiya modeled a perfectly good T-72M1, but at the time everybody who everybody else thought knew what they were talking about said the glacis was only good for a very few East German tanks, and the turret was "all wrong" too. I replaced the kit glacis with stock, built the basic hull and stopped. Then a couple of years ago I scored a Miniarm turret for a T-72 Ural, easy to build with the Tamiya kit (right?) and put it on the shelf too. Well, the hull started talking to me, like Chuckie, so the other day I got re-started on it. When I shelved the hull lo many years ago, it was just the basic hull and running gear with the glacis roughed in. The turret was still in the box. As of today, I have the hull nearly done and the turret about halfway there. Ug, the turret: beautiful detail, lots of short-shots, ridiculously fragile parts, instructions that leave a LOT to be desired. No worries though, I'm building a Syrian tank and it will be a true rolling wreck, as pictured in the two volumes of the Abrams Squad books: "Syrian Armor at War". As it sits today: IMG_3609 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3610 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3612 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I'll be doing a sand-over-green color scheme with lots of grime, scrapes and peeling paint. I need to after the last few builds. They were all neat and tidy with just some light dusting whereas this build will be rode hard and put up wet, over and over.

A shelf queen back on the bench is always a good thing.

Just a couple of minor things left to do before paint, the most obvious being the need to severely beat up the road wheel tires. I'm waiting until after painting to install the tow cables, antenna and driver's hatch. IMG_3613 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3614 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3615 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3617 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I'm thinking about trying hairspray to do some serious abrasion, should be fun since I've never tried it.

Painting started: over a good coat of a medium brown (Tamiya AS-22 from the can) I applied hairspray, then Vallejo 4BO Russian Green, also canned. Then I started scrubbing, adding color back in and scrubbing some more. Happy, I shot a coat of matt clear enamel. Next will be the yellowish tan in blotches, with more scrubbing. Also done was damage to the side fuel tanks and storage boxes. IMG_3625 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I think I overdid the damage to the hull, hopefully weathering will blend it in, and it will be HEAVILY weathered.

I'm trying to decide now if I should scrub some more of the sand color off, but since the whole tank will be so heavily weathered with gray and sand colored pigments, I think I'll seal it as is, then make it dirty. IMG_3626 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3627 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Google images of tanks in Syria, everything that pops up is filthy.

Phenomenal work! Modelcollect has a 1/72 scale model kit of a Syrian T-72 as well. I'm taking notes here so when I can get it, I can try to build mine half as good as this at least!

That open hatch was begging for a tenant, so here he is, a guy cobbled together from Dragon, CMK and Academy parts. IMG_3699 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Now I feel better. Obviously I'm no figure painter, but he'll do.

Great stuff as always, Russ! And yeah, I need to get back to doing something myself. It's been an eventful summer and little time for the bench. That's slowly changing.
