It has been quite a while. Due to personal reasons my bench has just been gathering dust. So much so that I am actually having trouble getting going again. To that end a small project is in order to "get the juices flowing". Tamiya M-10 Tank Destroyer. I am leaning towards opening it up. My "skills" are more than a little rusty. So far I have only managed to white glue some parts together. I also mapped out where, if I were to open it up, I would make my cuts. More to come..... Joe

Too bad I already got my stash filled to the max with Academy and AFV Club M10's & M36. The Tamiya kit must be nice. I'm tempted by their new US Infantry team though, just released.

Tha Tamiya kits are fabulous, the only ones that get the exterior dimensions correct. Their only serious flaw is the lack of a driver's compartment, but those Academy kits in the stash can supply everything for that.
Just curious...why open it up that way? Are you planning to replicate a cutaway museum exhibit? The driver's hatches can already be opened if desired. Opening the engine bay would require real surgery, but it isn't worth it unless you've got an engine to put in there. Some Academy releases had one; better ones are available in resin.

I believe the M10 hulls are fairly correct on both kits, maybe the Academy even a tad better than the AFV Club, or was that the Hellcat? For the turrets I got resin replacements, from Legend, I think. The Academy turret will be discarded. The Academy hull will receive a left over AFV Club turret with resin updates. Maybe some scratch and surgery is needed. For the suspensions I have collected Tasca/Asuka updates years ago, plus some interior updates from Tank Workshop. So I should end up with one US M10 with early turret and one British Achilles with duckbill extensions. Before the appearance of the Tam's, my approach was probably as best as one could get it, so I will stick to this plan. The money is needed for the house now...

Tobi, the Academy hulls are nearly four scale inches too narrow, which throws off the proportions of literally everything. AFV Club is about the right width, but the hull sides have incorrect angles and height, and the turret is oddly shaped. Only the recent Tamiya M10/M10C kits are dimensionally accurate, according to those with access to the original US Army Ordnance Department drawings.

Thanks for looking in. To be honest this was going to be just a quick build, out of box. Then I found a manual with some decent stuff. For me it is not if the kit is precise in measurements. It is not if the shape is spot on. It is about building. Why open it up? Well to be honest most of the time it is just to see if I can do the kit justice. I enjoy the research and try my hand at scratchbuilding details rather than purchasing resin sets. This will not receive an engine. It will be just the fighting compartment. I am not 100% sold on opening it up to be honest. I am pretty much set to scratchbuild some details.
Again thanks for looking in.

An update. Still not totally sure if I will open up the M-10 but trying to knock some rust and dust off. To that end started on the transmission and front bulkhead. Slowly looking like the pictures. Also played a bit with the seats and frames. Looks kinda like I havent done this for a while. All comments, critiques, and criticism are requested. Joe

Seems like a great build to work the rust off and the interior looks darn good so far!
Now I wish I could find something to clear the dust from the bench!

Joe, there may have been a lot of dust on your bench from so long a time away from it, but from where I sit; you've lost none of your impressive scratch building skills! I am overwhelmed at your amazing talent!

Ever since I've been on the forums, you've always been there doing what you do. In that time, you've always amazed me with your brilliance when it comes to scratchbuilding and your ability to make it all look just like the pictures in which you draw your information from. This is the first time I've seen you work your magic on a wheeled/ tracked vehicle and am very much looking forward to not only your progress but in continuing to learn yet more about the hobby from your work.
I'll be watching this one rolling forward. Build on Joe.....you da MAN!!

After many days of thinking about it...well...it's too late to change my mind. Able to see a whole lot more with it cut. All comments, critiques, and criticism requested.
