A quick pic of the top, showing the later Academy cupola I found, more correctly sized than the one from the old Magach6 kit I was planning on using. IMG_2283 by Russel Baer, on Flickr There's about a 20% size difference, and I had to make an adapter/reducer, same as the real thing.

More bits added, including an extra can rack I based on a couple of pics I have, with some guesstimation involved. I'm going to leave the mantlet ERA off, as well as the 50 cal, digging around now for a couple of 30 cals for the loader and TC. I also need to do the fender stowage (tent and stretcher) and after that it meay be paint time. Thanks y'all. Yup, it's getting heavy too. And now, it's got the paint started. Same as my usual, Krylon rattle can with the detail painting begun in Vallejo acrylic. To try and get the scruffy look so many of these things show after a bit of use, I used acrylics in various shades close to the base color on a few of the ERA blocks. I don't know if it's atrick of the lighting or a lot of the blocks get replaced, but I have pics showing obviously differently colored blocks. We'll see how it looks after weathering begins. So far: IMG_2376 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_2375 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Since I'm such a slow painter, the next kit is ready to go to the bench.

Sharp!! The empty reactive armor frame makes it quite a bit more interesting than it would be otherwise. You are gonna install the 105, yes?

For some of y'all, this is the fun part. For me, it's the tense part since I've had so many things go wrong during painting and weathering that it's become my "less than favorite" part of modeling. But moving along, here's what I have after a light overall wash with brown acrylic (Vallejo brown) followed by a very selective pin wash using Tamiya panel line accent in dark brown. This will be lightened up using dry pastels in my usual light earth and sand colors. IMG_2377 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_2378 by Russel Baer, on Flickr There's a show in January that I'd like to bring this to, probably the only thing that's preventing me fron starting something else while "paint dries"....

Wow, so sensational! Man, every time I think I'm starting to get pretty good, I see something like this and realize how much I don't know how to do.

T'anks y'all. So, may be hard to see on a monitor (is on mine) but there's quite a bit more dirt and grime on it now, (not the monitor ) layered in shadowed areas and under the ERA. I really want to emphasize the 3D layered effect of the ERA, so I'm actually going back to my earlier days in modeling and treating the sur]faces as if they were 2D and using paint to create shadows. I'm still optimistic.... IMG_2379 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_2380 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I have to take care to leave a fair amount of the original base color showing, otherwise I just end up with a muddy coating, not a layered effect.

I think the weathering looks very appropriate for a modern tank in a desert environment. Well done!

T'anks y'all. Here's a little more, weathering pretty much done except for stowage, to be added. The pics I'm working from show lots of stuff, tanks parked up and crew sleeping off a long road trip. IMG_2381 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_2382 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I'm working on the stowage junk now, and checking references for details, but it's really close now.
