Awfully nice of those snakes, to protect you from those dangerous birds. You got that right Bruce. The mom would squawk a lot when I went outside. Probably warning the young I was there by saying "duck". The other young'un flew off today. I closed the lids on the lights so they can't return. When I went out later the birds were still making a racket. I think they were "grouse"ing about me closing it off. Hey, a little bird humor there duck, grouse...never mind. The snakes wouldn't have bothered me had they not been so close to the door.

So am I Joe. And this is what they were nice enough to leave behind. And I may try to attract more snakes, further from the door. I gotta catch me a live mouse...

And just when I thought it was over this little one was waiting for me to get home. I got home just when it was getting dark so I didn't mess with it. I put it in an empty garbage can and transferred it away from the house. It was climbing up the garage window. There is a bird nest at the peak of the roof, just under the eave. I'm not sure if this is the same one as my original post. Seems a bit longer. Maybe not. I may have to start tagging their ears when I catch them LOL.

That would be the Garter Snake. We have them here as well.

A black and yellow garter snake would look cool. Sounds like Pittsburgh colors, black and gold but the gold sure looks yellow to me. We have garter's that are green and yellow. More like Green Bay

We get them dark like that. Pretty snake. I haven't seen one in years. Usta live against the woods 10 years ago. Quite normal to see them there.
I never messed with the small ones. My neighbor at the time would. They would usually "let go" (family friendly) when you picked them up by the tail. He'd do it and his hands would smell bad for a long, long time. They like to bite too.

That's a pretty snake. Big enough to pick up too.

It does look longer than that. I'll pass then on the afore mentioned reasons .

That would have been a picker upper. I use a minimum of 2 feet, preferably a tad longer. I pick them up by the tail. Their heads are far enough away from their tail that it is unlikey to get bit. The letting go part is still a strong possibility . I usually wear gloves.

That's a high probability with Garter Snakes.

Pretty cool visitors, but like Joe said, I'll keep my bears, elk, occasional moose, deer once in a while, and of course those pesky grey wolves and yodelin coyotes. My wife seems to like snakes, but I'm not too fond of em. I'm not afraid of em, use to live in the desert, Mojave Greens were new back in the early 80's, they're just not the cuddly type, lol.. Animals are funny sometimes, they act like little kids. The lil guy was swingin his leg just hangin out till mum called him down.

Here at the new place, whenever we come home after dark, there are two or three rabbits that hop away in different directions! Too fast for me to get a pic of them!
