Bruce, here's a tip and I do it like this, it works perfect for me.
I paint the eyeballs with gloss acrylic paint (white broken with a super small tad of red). Once this is dry I finish the eyes with enamels or oils which have a big advantage as ferked up pupils can be easily removed without damaging the white eyeball.
