It will be a long time befor this one is started but I recently bought an old cigarette card of a Lancashire Fusilier in Gallipoli and whilst at work used some spare time to have a go at making a base for it. I used sand mixed with a two part quick drying resin (boy does it smell!!) pressed into a suitably sized bung ( used to plug machined holes ) this one is a bit too deep I think.
Put the figure on it just to see what it might look like ,it will obviously be painted and maybe a bit of plant life and small rocks added.

The FUusilier being one of them.
