Call me "Behind the Times" or a "Luddite" or just a stubborn old "Curmudgeon" - all of which may be partially true - but there's a change finally coming to my household.
This morning I placed two online orders. One was to Amazon for a very nice, distressed oak style, 58" long TV Stand. The second was to Best Buy for free delivery of a new, 55" Sharp 4K Smart TV with Roku built in.
Now a lot of you might be saying, "Big deal...it's a new TV", but the one that's being replaced (and being hauled away by Best Buy for $20) is the important part. It's a 2003, 53" Panasonic REAR-PROJECTION TV (720p HD) that I bought new for over $1000 and it has never had the bulb replaced -- it STILL WORKS!!! The new TV is only $300!!!
Needless to say, I can't wait for next week when everything gets delivered and I get to rewatch some of my movies on the ultra-clear screen.

Welcome to the world of thin TV! I had a Mitsubishi 48" from 2003 that was about as big as an upright piano! Good thing it had wheels! I replaced it a few years ago with a 48" Vizio that only required one person to move. Later on, I added a 55" Vizio that is even lighter than the 48"! I like my Vizio tv's!

If you're a Curmudgeon then so am I. I might not be an "Old" one in a lot of your eyes, but each day I find myself yearning for simpler times. I'll be 43 in just over 2 months and have spent 23 years working in tech support, systems administration and for 8 years software development. I have an iPhone, an iPad a software development server, a dev laptop and a laptop for my full time job. I find myself wanting to break free and be away from the technology!

LOL, Joe! Mine will be positioned so maybe one seat at the kitchen table will be able to see it, but all 4 seats at the kitchen bar will have a prime viewing angles.

I've just been looking online at some of the "new" Norwegian Style recliners and really, really think I want one. The problem is coming up with a room layout that allows me to get one while still fitting in all the existing furniture...can you say, "Tetris!"

I hear you!!!
I was tempted to just put a bowling ball through the front of my rear-projection dinosaur, but decided to give it a proper send off. Maybe one of the delivery guys will actually give it to a person or organization who can use it!

You will be impressed by the resolution on the 4K TV. I got a 43 inch version about a year and a half ago, the largest that will fit in our cabinet and plenty big for our purposes. It cost $300 bucks, and replaced an elderly 720p, 32 inch unit that cost $800 back in 2009 when all the tube TVs had to go. That one went upstairs to the master suite, in turn replacing a 19 inch 720p unit. I probably won't get worked up over further increases in resolution as technology advances because at my age (56) there's little point to it. I'm never going to turn over an entire wall to a video screen, so 4K is plenty. You will probably find it to be more than adequate, too.

That old rear projection TV in the first picture was a 720p HDTV...(sad but true). I bought it in 2003 for just OVER $1000!!! The new Sharp 4K Roku TV was only $300 and is roughly the same size.
After setting it up I'm thrilled with the system. Tonight I'll do another scan for channels (digital antenna) because my reception is slightly better after sunset. I also need to buy a digital optical audio cable so my TV will send the sound to my home theater system.
I'll be watching Aquaman for the first time tonight with the new system.

Watching Mad Max: Fury Road on Blu-Ray with a 4K screen is pretty impressive, too!
