I knew I would get at least one Bah Humbug!!! Crimbo doesn't seem as fun as it did when we were kids and it was less commercialized does it Pete???

I think back to when I was a child and the Christmas catalogs would start coming in the mailbox... we would each take one and start putting our initials by every toy and item in there with the hopes that Santa would somehow know we wanted all that stuff!!! Hundreds of items... hopes and dreams... my poor Dad probably sat in his recliner pulling out his hair in the corner and wondering who the fool was who thought it was a good idea to send these nasty catalogs to us!!! That is when I do believe the real commercialization of the holiday began to shift from family and friend time celebrating a true Christmas time together with a great meal and a time of singing carols and just enjoying each others presence with a modest homemade gift or trinket to show your love and affection around a modestly decorated tree!!!

I didn't respond because I've seen the Christmas items newly set up in the local Walmart's Garden section (where they appeared 2 WEEKS AGO!) and of course, there's always the perpetual Christmas aisles in Hobby Lobby. For crying out loud, I needed lawn fertilizer not Christmas wrapping paper!
However, I already have nearly all my Christmas shopping done (or the gifts have been identified) and all of it will be done at least a week before Thanksgiving.

I think the realization that it has changed from what it was to what it is now comes with age. I have come to appreciate Thanksgiving and Christmas more now as time spent with family after having lost some close members of my family like my grandparents, dad, and stepdad. I value that time more and play tons of classic Christmas music starting in November as a way to remember the great times I had growing up. I still see the magic through kids eyes though...even though my two are older now, I have some younger nephews that still get excited and I try living that through their eyes. While I do love getting models and whiskey for Christmas, I've come to cherish giving and sharing time with the small family I have left more than ever.

Nowadays, I'd rather not get anything for Christmas, myself. I really don't need anything, except model kits, HAHA!) I have a growing number of grandkids, and great-grandkids that we focus on, these days.

Well, this post will most likely be removed due to it's content, but for me Christmas is more than all of that. I for one hate seeing it called X-mas or worse: Crimbo; but to each his own. For me, the most important thing about the whole season is birth of Christ. I revel in the celebrations of the Nativity plays that I participate in since that;to me is the true reason for Christmas. Family is of course, utmost in importance as well; spending as much time with family while remembering the Holy Family at it's start brings out the 'special-ness' of the whole season. Gifts are nice, and I enjoy getting models for Christmas; but the real gift to me is all the time I spend with family and friends during the season, especially since I have cancer and have no idea whether I'll have much more time with anyone. The pinnacle of the celebration of Christmas is the Midnight Mass I go to every year. That, to me... is Christmas.
I guess in that respect, I have not allowed the "commercialization" of Christmas to affect me. In this manner, I have kept that at bay since in my own away, I keep the true meaning of the season alive.
Okay, feel free to delete this once it offends someone. I will not apologize for it though.

This won't be deleted Mark as I opened this specifically for discussion of the holidays and you have a viewpoint based on your upbringing which everyone is entitled to share their point of view... whether or not someone else feels that way is their choice. As long as we can be grownups and allow our differences their is no issue. So don't worry my brother!!!

I am good friends with a Jewish person who doesn't celebrate Christmas at all as he is traditional in his beliefs! Doesn't ruin our friendship at all though!!! We find common ground as friends who have different beliefs!!!
