mr color leveling thinners works really well with the acrylics paints I use, tamiya and mr color. Mixing is nothing mystical really I just either use a standard paint or usually lighten it with tamiya flat flesh, buff or white depending on the intensity of the effect I'm looking for. I don't really go for so called correct colours but prefer to use a darker base colour and then add lighter tones to add highlights & depth. This works really well with single colours and to a certain extent with multiple colour schemes. I also work on the principle that everyone's colour perception is different so go with what looks right to me. I've never obsessed with say the correct shade of olive drab or afrika korps yellow. Instead I look for a scale effect colour after all what's correct on a full sized challenger tank would look wrong on a 1/35th kit. also a gloss coat and subsequent weathering will always darken the initial colour so I always go a few shades lighter. Thinning is again nothing special I add thinners until the paint has a milk like consistency and will drip off my paint stirrer easily. For lighter coats slightly more thinner and less pressure dialed in on the compressor works for me. I do try different things on each model but this formula works for me. always use a thinner you are happy with as it's an important factor in spraying as it's the carrier for the paint pigments. For me mr color with it's self leveling properties always works well as produces a nice smooth finish. hope that helps mate

It does. Didn't even know Mr. Color made a thinner, which was compatible with Tamiya. Excellent tips!

I've finally finished the laborious task of painting the camouflage on the model. I first thought of spraying & masking but in the end decided to hand paint the camo as the thought of all that masking sent shivers down my spine! Mind you painting the pattern by hand was equally time consuming and it was not helped by takom's poor painting guide. Firstly it's tiny and very difficult to work out the placement of the different colours and secondly the pattern just does not look right. So using a mixture of my reference pictures and the guide I managed to sort out a decent pattern. I used vallejo 70837 US field drab for the brown & 70889 US olive drab for the green. I've seen the brown on the real thing very reddish brown and also very light brown so went for the lighter shade. The turret stowage box was sprayed a reddish brown and the lower portion of the barrel was sprayed german grey. This is a feature very apparent in all the pictures I've seen and I suspect it's to do with the barrel recoil on firing. The models also had a coat of gloss ready for further detail painting. It's a big bugger to paint so I took my time and painted the pattern in bite sized sittings.

Superb brush painting Pete ! Did you use Valejo's brush painting medium ? No mate just water to thin slightly. decals are now on, all four of them & I've done the detail painting. Next I can add a bit of chipping and get stuck into the weathering.
